Oh wow. This is interesting. Don't suppose anyone has a shot of them closed while driving really fast haha. ?? Curious if its a solid looking grill

I was thinking it would look something like this grill, but with the bottom holes being covered up.

Thank you the explanation Mark S. I went out to the OB and saw the shutters. Thanks JAD67428 for the pics. Very interesting feature.

From what I could find online, "Active Grille Shutters open and close automatically to control airflow, reducing aerodynamic drag and improve fuel efficiency." How can one tell if they have this system on their BS?
When grille shutters are open on a dusty road, is it allowing dirt into the engine compartment?

Ooo this is a good question. Not that I think that would matter though. Since most vehicles probably don't have them to begin with. Dust gunna get in the compartment either way through the wheel wells and up into the engine bay.

Here's a pic of a setup off a ST. They can fail and if there closed you will overheat. If there open your ok.

Bottom shutters below bumper are in front of inter-cooler. Just checked, mine is parked in garage hasn't run all day. All shutters are open. Did notice the other day, when I started, my lower set slowly closed. Didn't notice if top ones did. Will definitely check in AM.
Also have you noticed on the passenger side of radiator (fan is offset to driver side) and on the engine side there are 5-6 top hinged plastic shutters that hang closed. Guess when the front shutters are open, air flow pushes the engine side shutters open depending on air flow force.
Don't know if top & bottom sets are slaved to open/close together. Will definitely look in AM.

Yes; this is why you have an engine intake air cleaner.

My car is in the workshop right now. Few days ago I was on the road, uphiling and I got a message "power reduction to prevent engine overheating" .... Temperature gauge was almmost in the red dot.

In the dealer they said that there was an error message recorded in the ECU about problem in this active grill (i Imagine it remained closed when shouldn't be).

Waiting for a diagnose with Ford engineers.
