Great info on an AGM battery. Though I never use stop/start, I'm probably going to go AGM. This vehicle is supposed to have an AGM battery. The early BS had an AGM.

My BS has the EFB in it and I have the AS/S eliminator installed on mine. No issues in over 12k miles so far (knock-on-wood). If it goes, it will get an AGM. Cheers!

A breakdown from a failing battery could be considered more costly.

My FoMoCo lead acid battery caused random electrical issues from the beginning of ownership. I did the most common checks and adjustments, I disconnected the battery cables, cleaned the battery posts and cable clamps, did the same for the ground cable connection and reconnected and tightened everything down.
The random electrical issues mostly went away until around 19k miles then they were more frequent and more random, as different error messages would be displayed in the dash.
Some days the BS would start fine and you would drive to the store for example, come out to leave and the battery would act dead and not start, othertimes it would go for weeks without having starting issues.
The worst would be when the BS would randomly die, the dash would light up like a Christmas tree and then everything would go completely dead, luckily that only happened a couple of times and not in an overly dangerous situation. Also the auto start stop wouldn't function, with the message being not available due to battery charging, didn't matter how far you drove.
The BS got to the point it couldn't be completely trusted, it took 3 trips to the dealer to get it taken care of under warranty.
I had the dealer check it out during one of the oil change services, they said everything is normal. 2nd time I specifically made an appointment for the electrical issues and they could not replicate any issues and again said everything is normal. 3rd time I said I don't want the BS back until it's fixed, and again stated the electrical issues, this time they replaced the battery with a Motorcraft AGM under warranty, it's been a little over 4k miles now and have not had a single electrical glitch, the auto start stop functions so well its basically transparent as it should be.
Obviously not much time has elapsed since the battery was replaced, but so far so good.

AGM is a lead acid battery, BTW. My non-AGM in my BL using auto start/stop over the past 2 1/2 years has presented no issues nor any sign of performance different from new.

Maybe lead acid but a different technology using 99.9% lead spiral coils and is said to last longer than ordinary batteries. Especially in cold and hot weather.

Absorbed Glass Mat; essentially they pack more and denser battery internal components closer together (the electrodes are wrapped in electroyte-soaked glass) for higher efficiency both daily and over the long term. AGM is a good battery. "Conventional" batteries are OK too.

My BHEF battery (not AGM) has been good for 16,000 miles and 18 months so far. I use Auto Stop Start all of the time. When it quits working (mostly in the winter) from short trips with the lights on, I know I have to put in on the charger. Letting your battery run down shortens its life. The BHEF48H6 battery is listed at $226, which is more than I've ever paid for a battery. The Interstate AGM replacement battery (MTX-48/H6) is listed at $265.

AGM batteries are used in boats as an upgrade because that can be on side or even upside down and are fully sealed. The life is sometime a little better because of internal design but otherwise function like a wet lead acid battery.
unless I’m missing something ?
