Hello everyone! This is my first time posting anything on here but I have read a lot of the other threads since I bought my Big Bend last summer. Earlier this week I got a check engine light and my code reader gave me a P0456 (EVAP System Very Small Leak) code. For reference I am the second owner and I bought it from a private party and I have just over 80,000 miles on it. I have no warranties for anything so keep that in mind. I have read all the other threads that I could find regarding the EVAP leaks and it looks like the main problem is usually the EVAP purge valve assembly (part number for 1.5 engine: LX6Z9D289SJ). I am prepared to purchase that part and do the install myself as I have read that other people have done the same without too much issue and I would like to avoid the $800 dealer service fee that I have seen other people get quoted. I am pretty mechanically handy but doing any electrical work on a daily driver can be a little scary. I mainly wanted to start this thread to ease some of my worries to see if anyone could help answer these two questions:
1. My code reader is only showing one CEL code (P0456) and all the threads I have seen where people had purge valve issues have had multiple EVAP codes (including P0456, P0496, and P0457) or slightly different EVAP codes so I want to make sure this is the part I should purchase and replace. I have cleaned out my gas intake and made sure the inlet flaps are both sealed and used the gas funnel to check as directed by the Ford app. I have also not noticed any problems/smells with driving or starting my car, though I have not had to fill up with gas since the CEL came on (and I do not overfill when I pump gas). I have briefly checked for damage around my charcoal canister and couldn't see any visible problems. If it were you, would replacing the EVAP Purge Valve be the best plan of action to addressing the issue?
2. Like I mentioned before, I am fairly handy and have done a decent amount of minor fixes and modifications to previous vehicles but wiring harnesses and electrical work is not my strong suit. It looks to be a pretty plug and play process to take out the old purge valve assembly and replace it with a new one, however, if anyone has any pictures or videos or other resources that could help me out I would greatly appreciate it.
I am a recent college graduate and just got married so saving money on a repair bill would be a great help. With that being said I do have a mechanic that I have taken this car to before that does a really good job and they have proven to be trustworthy but as most people know a trustworthy mechanic comes with an expensive price tag so that is my plan of action if I can't remedy this on my own with y'alls help. Thank you in advance to everyone that takes the time to help me out.
