If it doesn't rattle, it's not a real 1911. ;)

Five essentials:
1) Backup battery power- jump starter.
2) Viair air compressor with plug kit
3) Hi-Lift jack with Lift Mate (to attach to wheel)
4) Mattock - for digging out. An army shovel is almost as good, but the handle is too short.
5). Recovery Strap
With thsse tools, you can solve most problems that might come up. I've only had to be pulled out of the mud once, but he couldn't have pulled me out if I hadn't jacked up the truck and put rocks under the wheels.

Guess I should update my original post:
In addition to firearms (which I actually carry at all times) I have an “off-road kit bag” containing:
recovery boards
chains & tensioners
folding shovel/pick
tow strap/ hand winch (come-along)
inflatable ”ball” jack
emergency starter

misc tools, several knives, straps, cordage, gloves (always in vehicle)
first-aid kit (always in vehicle)
air pump & tire repair kit & breaker bar (always in vehicle)
fire extinguisher & electric flares (always in vehicle)

I haven't off/soft roaded in my BS yet, haven't had the time. But what I have from when I did in my Subaru and a few new things.

  • Air compressor, A VIAR
  • batery booster
  • jumper cables
  • set of tools
  • Recovery kit, two 30 foot (might be 20 foot) tow/recovery straps, one to use as a bridle to keep stress even), two steel shackles, three soft shackles, tree saver, a hitch with shackle (a Curt). Thinking about a kinetic strap for less jarring pulls.
  • Maxtrax traction boards
  • folding shovel
  • will add a long handled shovel, especially on the beach, once I get around to making or getting a mount for my cheap roof rack
  • combination bottle jack, jack stand
  • tire plugs in case of multiple flats or holes, I also have a set of the Gluetread for sidewalls in case of a bad situation just to get back to the pavement or someplace easier to get a tow.
  • flashlight
  • cheap Amazon pod light with a cigarette lighter plug for lighting up a workspace or camp
  • food, water, snacks,
  • emergency/survival supplies in case of being stuck for a while, freeze dried food, water filter, fire starting kit and/or small stove, extra water, small sleeping bag, tarp... in case of breakdown, or if someone I'm with breaks down, or for whatever reason we can't get off the trail that should have only taken a few hours and it now an overnight thing. I've had a buddy be stuck for 7 hours when stuck in the snow, and I've seen people stuck for a while because of an accident just bad enough to disable a vehicle. And I've seen a number of calls for help on a recovery Facebook page.
  • Glock 21 or Glock 20 depending on if I'm afraid of bears. Plus bear spray, and my normal self defense can of OC.
  • work gloves appropriate to the temp
  • slip on rubber boots, I saw a guy have these and it was one of those, why didn't I ever think of doing this before, things. Get those muddy and dirty, and keep your feet and normal shoes dry, then change back before you head home.
  • moderately well stocked first aid kit I assembled (I used to be licensed and certified as an EMT, plus friends who are paramedic and above trained.) that is always in my car.
  • Fire extinguisher, flares, LED flares, a couple cheap reflective triangles, orange safety vest. Also always in my car. I've only ever had to use the flares for other people though so far. I'm good with that.
  • Paper maps just in case I get lost... and getting lost is a skill I have mastered lol
  • Most likely a fixed blade or two and a hatchet.
  • Frequently a pair of binoculars and/or a spotting scope. I live in a mountainous area and in some of the forests there are some nice views. The east side of the state has a lot of wide open areas with nice view too.
