Why remove the name? Not a fan either.

Everyone has their flavor. I was going to remove the smaller "sport" portion of the name off of the back of mine. I personally cant stand the fact that ford made a white bronco and then put white letters on it.
I took the sport off mine and it does look better. And I know some people will say it’s not a true bronco, which clearly it’s not what gave that away and I really didn’t want one anyway could’ve gotten the big bend if I did, and the front grill says bronco.

I think the tailgate looks much better without the sport, no regrets there.

Nope!
Looks to me like you got hit in the back, got it repaired and the letters are on backorder.:)

How best to remove those “sport” letters without paint damage?

Heat and a non-marring pry tool. Make sure your pry tool is softer than aluminum, or you might dent the liftgate. Some report good luck with dental floss to cut through the adhesive. Once you get it off you'll need an adhesive remover to get the residual stuff off.

If your careful and have an idea of what your doing, those 3M eraser wheels work great too. But I put emphasis on "know what your doing". It's a very easy opportunity to burn clearcoat or create swirls. In the times I have used them they have saved me hours of scraping and picking at decals and adhesive.

Heat is the key but not too much to soften the paint.
