I have a 2021 Big Bend that I absolutely love, other than my rear brakes squeal like a New York bus. It only happens in reverse on start up when it is cold or wet outside (so basically all winter). At my house pulling out of the garage ever morning is one thing, but is embarrassing leaving work each day and after a Sunday morning church service.
I took it to the dealer, where they verified it. In fact, one of the service reps has a BS and she confirmed ā€œmine does it. it’s terrible, but they say ā€˜Ford states it’s normal’, but I think it will eventually be recalledā€. She even provided the attached documentation.
How can this be considered normal? My Toyota 4Runner’s brakes don’t do this. My 2012 Ford Escape’s brakes don’t do it. In fact, no vehicle I know of considers this normal. It’s worse than a New York bus on a new Bronco Sport…but no warranty repair or fix?

I owned my OB for almost a year with no noise. Then it started making that squealing back up noise. Then it stopped for a month or so. Just started up again. She is due for an oil change. I'll mention it, but it sounds like something we have to live with for now. ?

It's normal for Ford :)
I had a Ranger about twenty years ago that did the same thing. Ford eventually did a recall on the brakes.

Almost a year owning mine, been doing it every day unless you put it in reverse, hold brake pedal and wait a little. Eventually you will hear hydraulic release noise then try it.
We just have no patience :)

I am just amazed that since they added it into their documentation that it is then considered ā€œnormalā€. What if they document ā€œmay stall after brakingā€ or ā€œlights may shut off when going up hillā€, does that then mean it’s ā€œnormalā€ and OK?
I can’t think of any car manufacturer or dealer who own it to say, ā€œthis is our new Bronco Sport and after 2000 miles you’ll be able to hear the brakes from a mile away when starting up and putting it in reverse…it’s normalā€.

If you can't park it in a warm garage, maybe give this a try. At the worst, you'll have clean wheels.

Thank you for the recommendations. The worst part is that it will do it pulling out of the garage in the morning…and when I back out of my parking spot after work. Also, pulling out of a parking spot after church. It’s loud and embarrassing.
I’ve heard some people say it’s the type of brake pads cleaning off a very fine layer of rust on the disc, but why is it that there are thousands of other models of cars out there that don’t do this?
I feel like I could go down the road of buying and trying different brake pads, but feel like this is something that should need to be done on a new car that’s 4 months off the lot.
Any chance the open recall will take care of this when they have a fix? The recall is for front brakes, so I have no idea.

Moisture, clay, grease, faulty spot on the pads can cause this.

My wifeā€˜s 16 Explorer did this. I ran it to @ 50 and hammered the brakes then did it in reverse. It stopped.

my Land cruiser did this all the time, drove me crazy.

my VW, recently did it until I threw some new rotors and ceramic pads on it

So. It is not Brand specific. Likely one section on one pad with bad contact

Get to cleaning (one wheel at a time!) and some aggressive braking in a safe area. Determine which corner it’s coming from.

recalls are for safety concern. This is a nuisance, not unsafe…but it is not normal either.

I have this EXACT same issue. Seems mostly happens in very cold mornings.

My 2022 does the same - seems to be loudest in reverse when cold. There is a Ford recall coming on the rear brakes - seems to be for a different braking issue, but faulty pads are the cause.
So Ford may be replacing the rear shoes in the future...

The noise is not related to the recall, and it appears the resolution for the problem that prompted it will be replacement of the front brake pads, not the rear.

My 2021 BL started doing it last fall when the weather got colder. Now it does it every time it's cold and the vehicle has been sitting for a while. My dealer said it could be the rear pads suctioning to the rotors due to cold/moisture. I hope they either come out for a fix or something.
