Speaking of a 4Runner...
Before I bought my leftover Badlands, I was looking for a late model used 4Runner. The numbers were crazy. The used ones went up like crazy. I'm not a fan of the '25 4Runner. So I went back to a leftover BS. The 2.0l this time.

It's an "affiliated" forum, and threads here with specific content will bring up other forums with similar threads. Look at the discussions around the Slate.

And since you mentioned the "FourJogger", this is what I got at the bottom of my page:

the 1984 -87s would be the only 4 Runners I would consider

Back when it was basically just a Toyota pickup with a factory shell and rollover protection. I really liked those. At the Brits would say, a proper 4Runner.

The early '90's as well, at least up to '91 or '92 I believe, which you could still get the 22RE engine.

I had one w/the rare 22RE 4 cylinder engine, as well as w/a manual transmission. It was bone stock, w/no air conditioning.

The only real bad part w/it was that stupid, vacuum operated, shift on the fly, four wheel drive system they had, "BUT" there was a work around w/it though.

1. You could still add manual locking hubs to it since they still had the old style axle hubs.

2. Then, and most importantly, the vacuum operated system could be replumbed.
The issue w/the system, in order to operate properly, everything had to synchronized up in order to go into 4 Hi, which you had to play around with in order to work.
Also too, the vacuum lines over time would start to leak.

The work around, rather than for the vacuum actuator on the axle being normally open, you could force it to stay shut, thus allowing everything to be meshed up and turning when you wanted to shift into 4Hi. In other words, it operated like a normal solid axle.

Also, once again, they still had the same hubs as the original Toyotas, but w/locking plates on in place of normal locking hubs. You could thus replace the locking plates w/a regular locking hub.
When set up as such, driving in normal 2 wheel drive, w/the locking hubs open, gained you over 3 mpg since nothing in the front axle was now turning. I went from around 23 mpg w/the OEM system, up to 26 mpg.
Then when you wanted to use the 4 wheel drive, you went and locked the hubs, and start moving a little, allowing you to easily shift into 4Hi w/no issues since everything was immediately turning and messing up.
On a dirt or snow covered highway, w/the hubs locked, you could easily switch into and out of 4Hi w/no issues.
I think the maximum recommended speed was around 55 for 4Hi.
For 4Lo, you pretty much had to stop in order to switch into.

I believe the newer models, '92 and beyond went from a vacuum actuator in the front axle to an electric one, thus it wasn't as easy to modify, though I'm sure that it still could be.
Also too, I believe they went w/a front hub that wouldn't allow you to add a manual locking hub anymore.

Outside of not having any A/C, that 4 Runner was one great SUV, especially w/that 22RE engine. ?

I also tried to buy a used 4runner before I bought my Bronco. Prices were insane so I gave up. Now I have wish I had just bought the 4runner.

I was looking into '23-'24 SR5 Premiums high. $40's to low $50's nuts. The used ones went up 10-15% since the new '25 turbo 4 cyl came out. I wouldn't buy a high mileage one but many out there for sale with 250K and over 300K miles on them and still at a premium price.
