When I was buying my Badlands last March the dealer did not have any on the lot the way I wanted mine configured. The couple that were on the lot were missing options that I wanted like 360+ and the premium package. The dealer told me that it wasn't that they didn't want to order them for inventory. It was Ford that was restricting them from ordering Badlands trim. The dealer could not just order them for inventory. I was also told by the dealer that Ford could penalize the dealer for trying to get around the limit by placing orders as customer orders where there were no customers or if a customer ordered one and cancelled their order, frowning on the dealer switching those orders to dealer orders too many times. My opinion is that Ford is controlling what the dealers can order for inventory with a combination of keeping the price down on BS's on the dealer lot with fewer options and meeting the CAFE standards by steering customers to the smaller engine. Other manufacturers are pushing the smaller engines too. At the time we ordered one but there was a hold on building the Badlands and luckily one showed up on the lot that had the full option packages that we wanted so we jumped on taking that one.

I know at all of my local Ford dealers the Badlands models tend to sit way longer than the lower trims. Seems like the Big Bend/OB tend to move pretty quickly due to the price and what most people are wanting out of these.
At least locally, most people who want more capability are getting a full size Bronco, Wrangler, or bigger truck. I can’t even really tell you the last time I saw a Badlands BS driving by me but I see a ton of Big Bend and OuterBanks.

SO MAYBE THAT $3K markup wasn't so bad after all... I have myself a collectors item... : )
or just a trim level that isn't in demand  :cwl:
they had a badlands in when I bought my outer banks I looked at it but decided it was missing to many of the features I wanted so I went with the outer banks, plus the deal on it couldn't be beat. I would like to find out if there is a way to add the front camera to my outer banks.

there is the first and biggest misconception, the outer banks isn't a lower trim than the outer banks, it has way more options that are standard instead of options. think of the outer banks as the platinum level trim, and the Badlands would be the fx4 type level. just a base that has suspension mods and other mods geared for offroad. if you order the badlands, you have to add the premium package, the trailer tow package, the illuminated door entry and a couple other things to get to the Outer banks trim level, but you do get the 2.0L motor with the twin spool rear end and two more goat modes

Not a misconception at all. Badlands is by far the best and top trim from the engine and drivetrain alone. It is also the most expensive trim. OBX is essentially a base model with added creature comforts which is great if that’s what you want. However there are no difference in drive-train, engine, or suspension between base, BB, OBX whereas Badlands gets bigger and better in all of those categories.

No hate on the 1.5L models because I love my Big Bend and it is a fantastic little engine and great drive system but the Badlands 2.0 and drive system is still better and more capable.

It depends on how you define "better" and "more capable." More power? Certainly. Better off-road performance? Sure. But the lighter 1.5L engine provides significantly better fuel economy and road manners.

This is a fair point. I still don’t really think that makes the OBX the top trim by any means though. There’s a reason that the Badlands has more of the off-raod chops and that’s because it is most built for what the truck is intended/marketed for.

the other way to look at it which is probably more accurate, is the badlands is a base model with a drive train upgrade. we can go back and forth on this all day  :cwl:

Honestly I just don’t care enough to go back and forth on it. I will say that you are probably the only person who thinks an OBX is a higher trim than a Badlands. Even Ford themselves markets the Badlands as their top trim ?

the Bronco sport is intended for one market. the small category crossover market, it isn't a offroad machine it is a small crossover that was given some off road capability for families that want to go up rough roads to fish or camp. if you want a serious off road then the full size bronco fills that spot.
the big thing with the 2.0 in the badlands is it gives it a bit more torque which is beneficial for rocks and ruts when you want to keep engine speeds down but need the power, the lockable rear end is marginally better than a limited slip and is better in mud and rock crawling. the badlands gives you 1" more clearance, in reality that is still low for any serious 4x4ing.

But still better correct?

they don't market it as the top trim, just the most expensive, and that's because the drive train are pricy upgrades. the top trim used to be the heritage limited, but they are not making that anymore, and it was just a outer banks with the fancy labeling and the special paint.

Heritage limited had the 2.0L and Badlands Drivetrain? It was a Badlands with fancy labeling and special paint. Heritage and Heritage Limited are two different trims.
