Thule Tepui 3 person with moonroof

Hi there.

I have a 2021 BL with a moonroof. I see a lot of different information about the dynamic weight limit with aftermarket roof rails.

Basically, I'd like to buy the Thule tepui 3 person roof tent which weighs 120lbs. I currently have thule wingbar evo roof rails.

Per the spec of the vehicle I see that 100lbs is the recommendation (again, dynamically).

How concerned should I be with this difference? Clearly this is personal preference if I am willing to risk it, but just looking for thoughts? Is anyone else doing anything similar with any issues?

The limit is more to do with dynamics of the vehicle, so if you drive slower and more careful when you have the RTT installed (as you should with any RTT), it should be fine. Twenty pounds over the Ford limit is not going to suddenly make the vehicle unsafe.

Yea that's basically been my thinking. It's not like I'm going to start taking corners like a mad man haha.

The dynamic limit is more about emergency maneuvering than normal everyday driving. Driving slowly & carefully will certainly lower the risk for everyday driving, but there's always a chance you may need a sudden swerve to avoid a collision or other hazard. In such a situation, exceeding the manufacturer's recommendations will make it more likely your car will rollover. How much more likely? There are too many variables to say with certainty; "more likely" is probably the only answer you'll get from Ford.

The other consideration is offroading. Some trails will tilt your vehicle at a steep angle, and the more weight you have on top the greater the proclivity to rollover.

Personally, I take safety recommendations seriously. They're generally written based on testing, evidence, and previous disasters.

Since the Badlands tell us the angle of the road, I'd love to know the rollover angle for stock, lifted, and with roof top tent. In Engineering, we usually use a safety factor of 3. I noticed when I had a roof top box, my gas mileage decreased pretty dramatically.

Not really, sound a bit. But not a big issue. Can't speak much on milage as I don't really pay enough attention to it
