Installed the cat guard last month very easy, the skid plates this past weekend Took more time. Both the Cat Guard and skids were bought from JCR OffRoad. Drilling through the pinch seem took some work. Ended up buying some center drill bits making short work. Looks great as well as the extra protection they provide from rocks or any cat thief’.

Good work!!

As a side note, the primary cat is on the Turbo downtube which makes it difficult to steal. The secondary cat is now covered with your JCR Cat Guard. The secondary cat is not as expensive as the primary cat but I no longer remember the cost of the secondary cat (part cost plus installation cost for the secondary cat).

Caveat: The info above might not be 100% accurate and may not apply equally to the 1.5L Engine and 2.0L Engine Bronco Sports for all model years.

Sir, there is only ONE catalytic converter per Bronco Sport. If you are referring to the mid-pipe piece, that would be the resonator.

I’m referring to the post discussion above about the JCR cat cover

There are many posts regarding the primary cat (on Turbo downtube) and secondary cat used on bronco sports. As I said earlier, might not apply equally to 1.5L and 2L and maybe there are model year differences.

Those discussions are on this forum and on various other forums.

So are you saying all the posts about primary cat and secondary cat whether on 1.5L and 2L are incorrect and you know for a fact that only one cat is used no matter the Bronco Sport model or model year? (Wouldn’t be the first time a bunch of independent posts were incorrect but would like to understand your source of cat info for all Bronco Sport models and model years)
Dude, there is no such thing as a "primary cat', and a 'secondary cat' on any of the Ford 4 cylinder or 3 cylinder engines. There is ONE catalytic converter, and you are correct, it is on the downpipe off the turbo. But that's it. The next thing in-line would be the resonator. After that, its the mufflers.

I think you probably misinterpreted something you read.

I found this when I googled "how many catalytic converters are there on a bronco sport:

Primary catalytic converter is on the Turbo downtube followed by a secondary catalytic converter located under ā€œmetalā€ covering on badlands model (the JCR cat skid plate goes over the secondary catalytic converter).Dec 29, 2022

So, who or what is correct?

Don’t know for sure for all model years and all models including 1.5L and 2L and if if is this post (link below) might be something I posted which if was mine probably was not the original source (I didn’t read thru all the posts at this link)

You googled a question that came up with a response on this forum. There is only ONE catalytic converter on these vehicles.

I'm not reading through anything man. I have been underneath enough Ford's and have changed out enough downpipes to know how to count catalytic converters. Granted, I have yet to carefully "examine" the downpipe when I've been changing the oil to see if they have recently added a second cat for a reason that would baffle me ... but until someone tells me that 'yes, they DID add a second cat", Im going to stay with my experience on this one.

that’s a great pun!! ?
Consider me baffled. I'm going to have to take a deeper look when I have a moment to do so. Emissions must be a MF'er nowadays is my gut feeling on it now.

No need. I just called a muffler shop across the street from me (yeah I know, no one wants that) and he’s is getting prices but he confirmed there are 2 cats for the ā€˜22 Badlands with 2.0L engine.

I can see why you didn’t know .. it’s almost 5 hours labor to replace the primary cat (maybe was total for both cats). probably not done too often.

The primary cat is on the turbo downtube protected by the factory skid plate and the secondary cat is located below the front seat area as shown in the pic earlier in this post (the one protected by the JCR CAT GUARD).

Caveat: The info above might not be 100% accurate and may not apply equally to the 1.5L Engine and 2.0L Engine Bronco Sports for all model years.

Here’s background info for those interested in catalytic converters. Info was collected in 2022 timeframe but probably is still reasonably accurate.

Bronco Sport has at least 2 catalytic converters: (see caveat on prior post)

Primary catalytic converter is on the Turbo downtube followed by a secondary catalytic converter located under ā€œmetalā€ covering.

(Note: Removing the primary cat on the Turbo downtube requires skid plate/bash plate to be dropped; not sure if this is 2.0L Engine only)

Primary cat has an O2 sensor, the secondary cat does not have an O2 sensor.

The secondary catalytic converter reduces emissions during the start up phase before the primary cat gets to temperature (cold cats are not as effective as hot cats). It is not legal to remove the secondary cat.

Typically a primary cat cleans up HC HydroCarbon and CO Carbon Monoxide emissions, the secondary cat cleans up NOx Nitrogen Oxide emissions.

Nitrogen is trapped within the converter while oxygen passes through. The oxidation catalyst is the second catalytic event. It reduces unburned hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide by burning (oxidizing) them over the metal catalyst.

Typically catalytic converters are made up of three precious metals: platinum, palladium and rhodium.

Any exhaust work ALMOST necessitates the use of a lift. It just helps to get as much clearance as possible underneath. Getting underneath a vehicle is very key to helping understand it. I'm loathe to do it on jackstands. Getting too old. I'll change my oil, and try to snoop around a bit, but there is nothing like walking underneath a vehicle with a light. I used to have a very inexpensive DIY garage in a bad part of Miami, that I didn't mind going to, because I knew he ran a tight ship. I loved being able to use the lifts. But he went out of business a few years back. Haven't had a chance to lift any car since. In fact, I'm almost certain the last thing I did on lifts at his garage was change the downpipe on my Mustang.

Yes or just call a local trusted muffler shop and or look it up in Ford parts catalogs which of course aren’t always correct.

I’m an engineer (electronic) so prefer not to get underneath the vehicle lol. And there are many Bronco Sport articles with clear pictures and videos of underneath the BS pointing out the entire exhaust system including both cats.

Seeing those is when I decided I wanted to understand what primary and catalytic converters are and the purposes of each.

In fact, some vehicles (not Bronco sports) have more than 2 cats.

everyday I learn new things.
