I agree. We know the Government has mandated rear cameras which is fine.I, for one, would love it if the manufacturers allowed the CarPlay-run Apple Maps/Waze info to be displayed in the dash cluster. I use Maps daily and though I get the turn notifications and all on my watch, it still requires taking my eyes from the road.
Pre-CarPlay, Mercedes would put their internal nav system directions in the middle of the cluster as well as the main screen. It kept your eyes on the road. Why other manufacturers haven't adopted this on their digital screens is beyond me.
I'm less enthused by government mandates on anything than manufacturers actually coming up with reasonably good UX on their own that differentiates their brands but I get where you are coming from. Backup cams are a great safety feature overall, just like ABS and generally speaking airbags.I agree. We know the Government has mandated rear cameras which is fine.
Numerous brands have a Head Up Display as an option which projects various info onto the windshield including turning directions, speed, etc.
I think this is a very convenient feature. Next mandate by Uncle Sam?
The less government involvement, the better for sure. That's where manufacturers need to be proactive on safety features. Obviously, the cost will be passed onto the consumer.I'm less enthused by government mandates on anything than manufacturers actually coming up with reasonably good UX on their own that differentiates their brands but I get where you are coming from. HU display tech in cars has been around since the 80s. If you're a geezer like me you may remember the Olds Toronado Trofeo- it was the first car with a screen albeit a CRT and had HU among a bunch of other advanced tech for the era including an early nav system.
The key is always Apple's complete control over the OS and their stringent security protocols comparatively speaking.
One thing is for certain: You won't see this on anything GM. Which is part why you'll never see me buying anything GM either.
