The Badlands Sport is the off road class leader in the small unibody SUV segment. Its plenty capable for what it is - a Soft Roader. But its not in same league as a full frame vehicle like big Bronco and Jeep Wrangler. HRG is trying to push limits beyond what Ford intended for the Sport. Its pretty impressive what HRG could do with their lift kit bigger tires skid plate etc.

Regardless of how far it made it the bs is still a unibody car with independent front suspension and is not an off roader in my eyes. Sure this video is a bit extreme. But the bs has zero ground clearance, zero approach, zero suspension articulation. Cool looking little car that's made for dirt roads. I still like mine but didn't buy it for it's off road capabilities no matter the trim.
Bronco Sport angles
30.4-degree approach
33.1-degree departure
20.4-degree break-over
8.8 inches ground clearance
Front suspension 7.5 inches, rear suspension 8.1 inches of travel.

which are better than say Mercedes G550

or compared to a 2024 Land Cruiser

30.0-degree approach
22.0-degree departure
25.0-degree break-over

8.6 inches ground clearance

If you are comparing it to the regular bronco or jeep rubicon, then yea not so great but compared to other SUV's the numbers are better than everything else in its class and most of the full sized as well.

So cool to see what people are doing on these BS's. Hot Rodding has always been about pushing it to the limits and raising the bar. You like hot rodding 2 stroke mopeds? There is a place for ya. Small tire Drag Racing? Definitely a spot for that. Here's a vid with a guy on an old Honda 3 wheeler with a BBK playing in the Skeg along side of purpose built v-twin mud machines...AND NAILING IT!

You dont need to be put in a box as to right and wrong, when it comes to having fun in your rig, but what works for you.

I did buy it for its off road capability, and I am very happy with it, even without the lift. I did find out about the approach angle on Saturday. I dropped into a very steep washout and hit in the front. It pulled one of the bolts through the plastic skid plate. We did some road work with a mattock so I could get throgh without dragging. I did drag my hitch a little going the other way. When driving in the ruts, all of the roads have ice or rocks in the middle. The catalytic converter is right in the center. I just ordered a skid for it.

I took the HRG 2.5" lift kit into Desert Rat in Albuquerque, and they told me they weren't comfortable installing it. It made me uncomfortable because I trust their work. I sent it back and ordered the 1.5" lift. I found out they have a 20% restocking fee. That seems really steep to me. I generally don't order from companies that charge that much to restock. They promptly sent me the 1.5" kit, but the mailman dropped it and lost some of the small parts and the instructions. It has been a challenge to get it figured out with HRG, but they mailed the package yesterday. I had an appointment with Desert Rat to install it on Thursday, which I had to cancel. Now I'm looking at April 4th.

Sorry bout all that bad luck. My inlaws neighborhood gets bad icey ruts every year. This skid plate you speak of sounds like something I should look into.

Can you elaborate on why your shop didn't like the 2.5" kit?

I believe their reasoning was that it came with a foam piece to close a hole in the firewall. I didn't ask too many questions, because I trusted their judgement. Their phone number is 505 881-0931, if you care to investigate further.
