Too much hoorah about a poorly written memo and this mostly non-issue.

A Black roof on an Outer Banks has been standard.

The option of a Black or Carbon roof on a Badlands has been standard.

The build site now has a delete Black roof change popup and vise-versa if you change back from Carbonized Gray and your color is not Shadow Black or Carbonized Gray.

Seems like the only thing they have done is clarify that a Badlands must be two-tone.

Therefore:

A Carbonized Gray Badlands cannot have Carbonized Gray roof

A Shadow Black Badlands cannot have a Shadow Black roof

Otherwise: They would not be two-tone… DOH!

They had some web page logic issues (and still do), but that’s just a poor programming.

I am confidant that my Badlands will be as ordered... Alto Blue with a Carbonized Gray roof.
Sorry, but that is not correct. Carbonized Gray only comes with Carbonized Gray roof despite what it says in the configurator. The rock stars at Ford are not the best at these configurators.

Configurator let me build a black with grey roof or grey with black roof today. No errors and the generated images showed the two color Badlands.
If the configurator allowed you to build an all Black or all Carbonized Gray Badlands, you must be using a cached or another version of the configurator.

Open an Incognito page, clear your cache and browsing history for the configurator or use different browser. Confirm you are using the Ford 2023 configurator

When I build Carbonized Gray Badlands and select a Carbonized Gray roof, the body color is changed to Shadow Black upon acceptance of the PopUp terms.

1. Carbonized Gray selected

2. Shadow Black Roof is the Default

3. Select Carbonized Gray Roof. The PopUp denotes "Adding Painted Carbonized Roof also requires the following changes" Shadow Black will be added, Shadow Black Roof and Carbonized Gray Metallic will be removed.

4. Select Yes, Body Color is changed to Shadow Black with a Carbonized Gray roof.

5. The same is true for starting with a Shadow Black Body except there is a dumb programming error that changes the body to Area 51 when the Shadow Black roof is selected. Regardless, It won't allow a Black roof on a Black body OR a Carbonized Gray Roof on a Carbonized body.

You can get it to build that way in the configuration. You just won’t be able to get it that way. Ask me how I know! ?

I am considering an all black Badlands. When I do the configurator I don't have to select any roof color, because it is standard with a black roof. Why select a black roof when it comes black?
I was only going to select a roof color if I wanted something other than a black roof?
What happens if you do not select a roof color option at all? Sort of confused. What am I missing?

The configurator is botched up not working correctly. Black Badlands comes standard with black roof but black roof not selected by default. So if you want all black have your dealer order it and you'll be fine.

OK I will concede.. It does appear that you can get a Black/Black Badlands.. but not a Carbon/Carbon. Just don't click on the black roof option and you won't fall down that rabbit hole as I did.

For reasons unknown to us, Ford directed its web wizards to add a Black roof option box where it was not really needed because Black is the standard roof color, and then botched the selection functions at the same time. About the same time, Ford also issued the confusing memo that started this whole controversy. They did both for a reason they thought was clear.

I was very surprised when I ordered my Badlands, my dealer did not have any special dealer ordering tool other than Ford website configurator that we all see. Seemed very unprofessional for a company like Ford to not provide a product order tool to the dealers. Even the order confirmation number I was assigned seemed like it was a invented by the dealer, mine happens to have 1 letter and 1 digit repeated 3 times. What are the odds of that... and then they typo'd my email address so I never received anything from Ford.

I ordered at my local dealer which happens to be biggest Ford dealer in Northern California (unimpressed and not a promo for them). But alas.. Car Salesmen do not always have the brightest headlights. Check your order carefully before they submit.

We're just having fun here, right? Lot's of great information and mod ideas here.

Thanks to all the chatter from you guys about receiving your build date emails for orders submitted around the same time as mine, I learned that I should be receiving Ford emails as well. I pushed back to the dealer and was able to resolve the Ford communication issue. I have proof of order and build dates seem to have stabilized... mine hasn't changed since Nov 1.

You can get Carbon/Carbon Badlands. Matter of fact, that's all you can get. I did not order the gray roof, nor could I. That's what I wanted, but WEBO would not allow it. But, that's how it came and after many discussion with Ford, that’s the only way they make them now.

Hey everyone, @fordvideoguy is not saying you can’t order an Outer Banks or Badlands in the other colors. What he is saying is that you might not get scheduled right away due to the constraints. Keep your orders in and if you have not gotten a scheduled build week yet, see how long it takes to get scheduled with your other colors. He’s not telling all of us this information to cause any kind of arguments or disagreements. He is trying to keep us all informed. So when some of us are scheduled and some of us are not, maybe that is one of the reasons.

For those already in production (which would still be a ‘22) this would not impact you.

As always, thanks for the information @fordvideoguy.
But it is causing more confusion and anxiety. So it is incomplete.

No it's Ford dealer information. Here is a screen shot.

What a thread...

Occam's razor tells me that the most likely thing is some peon at Ford that transcribes those notifications into the system forgot the word "NOT". As in, "... NOT matching the body color." Or they left out the word "roof" when crafting the notice as in "... Bronco Sport's ROOFS..." It's also possible something more clear was worked out and in the interests of brevity, this is the mess they came up with.

Working with that, the current 2023 configur-tator on the website seems to follow that scheme. If you build a Badlands you can pick any color with any roof. Until you pick Shadow Black or Carbon Grey. Then the system denies you a choice for roof, or bumps you off the roof you already had picked if it matches the body paint. If you try to "add" Shadow Black roof to a Shadow Black OB, it bumps you off the body color.

So in other words, "constraints on two-tone paint schemes" means someone at Ford said "I want all the high end trims on the road to stand out with two-tone color." Then they banged out this confusing memo. Sure, it was different before. Doesn't matter if this is the new marching orders.

Its botched up like the brake recall. First brake recall said rear brakes then it ended up being front brakes and internet swirled around for about a year what was what.

Order the Badlands you want it will get sorted out.

I just got scheduled on a 23 Badlands with Alto Blue paint and black roof for the week of 01/09/23, so either the restriction was limited that to gray paint/gray roof and black paint/black roof, or it's been lifted now, best I can tell.
Most likely some communication issue that got sorted out. Congrats on getting scheduled.

Add to that the various automotive news outlets adding their two cents and all the speculation (I'm guilty!) on the forum. Holy cow, was that a mess.
