Good point! If you aren't planning to put a lot of miles in your car in a short time, and you save the same money you would pay in a monthly payment for your extended warranty you WILL have funds to cover repairs by the time your warranty expires. The overwhelming majority of people will not need the kind of repairs that will exceed the cost of an extended warranty during the warranty period.
If you do it my way you still have the money available when your extended warranty expires, so in a way you are getting an even longer warranty.
People who drive well below the average number of miles will only have (in some cases) a few thousand miles on their BS when the warranty expires due to time. So an extended warranty is an even worse deal for them.
At least those that drive a lot and max out the miles before the warranty times out are more likely to have a covered repair.
That said, the underwriter undoubtedly takes that max mileage into consideration. Buying an extended warranty is still 'betting against the house'.
