At some point I plan on bumping up the Wildpeaks on my FE to 245/65/17 but in addition to bigger tires I’d really like to widen the stance. I’ve thought about some 16” steel wheels w/a negative offset but I don’t know if any are available.
I’d be interested in any feedback or info that anyone has.

Thanks!

What is the current offset of your wheels? Reason I ask you do not really buy a ”negative offset” wheel you just need to make your wheel “less” positive. Depends on what the stock offset is for your FE, which I think I have heard is +37.55MM And what you want to achieve in push out.

How many inches are you looking to gain as that will drive suggestions others may give you for steelies.

Example (mostly for members other than you to help understand offset): you have a factory wheel that is a 17 x 7.5 with 31MM offset. 17 inches in diameter by 7.5 inches wide with a positive offset of +31 mm from the wheel’s center line. To keep everything else the same but wanted to make your tires stick out or poke 31 mm (about 1.22 inches) farther than where the outer edge of the stock tires rode, you would get a 17 x 7.5 wheel with 0MM offset (zero or neutral offset). If you wanted to make the tires stick out even further, you could get a wheel that is 17 x 7.5 with -31MM offset so your tires would stick out 62 mm (2.44 inches) farther than they did with the stock wheels.

Making the wheels stick out farther may cause rub issues when turning.

245 could cause rub on some vehicles, but he is moving from a 235 so that should not be too much of an issue and I have heard that those that have moved to a 245 from 235 have not had major issues. He is moving down to a 16. Just moving toward a more negative offset does not cause rub. It is other changes that cause that such as too big a jump in the tire width, etc.

Altering wheel offset (more specifically, altering the effective centerline of the resultant tire contact-patch) will alter the angle of forces applied to all of the bearing surfaces in the wheel hub. That might not be desirable.

Definitely something to consider. Any time changes are made there, including spacers, it can cause unexpected changes in the dynamics.

Thanks for the explanation and all of the info!
It's possible that the extra inch of width from the bigger tires would get it done. I just think that in stock format the BSs all look too narrow. I'm still on the fence w/16s, I like the extra sidewall and how the 16s look. I would have opted for them but I didn't order mine, it was a dealer order that I got to before anyone else did.
