What hobbies do y’all have?

It’s winter… which means my father and I have been preparing for our biggest hobby we share together… making maple syrup. We’ve been doing this since Covid, as a way to still get outside and do stuff together. Our first year, we made 2 gallons, second year we made 5, third year is the year I got really involved, and we made 19 gallons. Two years ago we got a new evaporator, and decided to go a little more into it and tapped 121 trees and made 43 gallons of syrup. Last year, we tapped 84 trees and made 35 gallons of syrup.

I also used to build custom headlights for cars. That was a blast, but people are too… people-y… and when I had customers in the Middle East (Saudi Arabia) messaging me at 3/4am, and then get pissed off I didn’t reply, I kind of lost my ambition to make them.

Anyways, let me know what y’all like to do outside of work! I’ll add some photos of the setup for syrup and some of the lights I’ve made, as well as our new maple syrup making room I’ve been working on for the past three weeks. ‍

Wow, cool hobby that I know nothing about. That's great that you have a shared hobby to enjoy with family. Thanks for sharing! Most of my hobbies revolve around cars or nature. I like to restore and rebuild cars. My Dad is probably the biggest supporter of this and enjoys helping with all my car adventures. We have travelled all over to pick up cars and parts. Lately, we have been picking up cars on copart to fix up. One of my Bronco Sports is a copart car that had front end damage. It's a fun and challenging hobby. One project I've yet to get to is restoring a 1930 Ford Model A Tudor that I found half buried in a pasture. That'll be a fun one. Dad and I also like to fish and go to the mountains. We try to take a fishing trip yearly and we always find a way to the mountains each year. Once there, we like to go Jeeping, fishing, or just relax. I've typically used my YJ in the past for the mountain trails, but we have used my Bronco Sport more and more as it is just as capable and more comfortable.

Mmmmmm, you had me at Syrup! As a retired chef, I cannot expound enough on the joy of pure maple syrup, that stringy fake crap is disgusting.
I also use maple sugar in a lot of my recipes, especially my bbq rub.
Maple syrup id a good source of iron.

So my hobbies are now traveling and cooking for my wife. Fifteen years and only 2 dinners that were not good.

Dad and my sister do an annual fishing week in Canada. They’ve been doing it for… oh, jeeze… 20 years now. Dad and I spend the winter ice fishing together.

And cars are a huge hobby of mine, as well. I’ve got an 05 SRT4 that I’ve had for 12 years now, and it’s just my “I wanna go fast” car. It dunk’s at 297.7whp and 376.4wtq. And it weighs 2300 pounds wet, 2500 with me in it. It’s got one hell of a power to weight ratio. I just really hate the torque steer it comes with.

We had a large maple tree in our backyard. One year my Dad thought it would be cool to tap it and make some syrup. Not much sap, but lots of laughs for the family.
