I pre-memorized most of the route (it's not that convoluted). Oddly enough, I used the built-in nav for much of the remote sections, as it doesn't rely on cell coverage. It was great showing the next series of bends and twists coming up. I didn't need it at all from a navigation standpoint, it's one road with no options, so you just follow it from one end to the other.
Just curious. I've not been that far out west. I've just seen videos on YT where guys are taking Broncos and Sports out to the desert and it's just, flat, desolate, and no road signs, just turns at random forks in the path to take you to different places.

That's an accurate observation for most of our off road trails. The Apache Trail is a designated state route (AZ-88) and is super easy to follow. There's quite a number of others that are similar in that they're a straightforward point-to-point or loop, but once you get off the "main" trail or route, you def need something like OnX or AllTrails (and I have both).

OnX and AllTrails still have many benefits, even if you know a trail intimately. First, as you questioned, is excellent offline capability. Additionally, they both offer rich trail-specific info that Google, Waze, and the built-in systems wouldn't even consider necessary.

A third option is a dedicated GPS such as Garmin, which would have the trail and topo data preloaded. The weak point for those is that updates are generally limited to annual and paid.

I have a vehicle that can finally handle I-24 traffic and potholes around Nashville, and now all I want to do is see stars. 40 years on this planet and I've only ever seen Orion and the Big Dipper...

Venus & Jupiter are visible in the night sky, typically in a west-northwest direction. They're the most prominent objects other than the moon right now. Venus is the brighter of the pair. They're both more visible than either Orion or the Dipper.

Another great trip write-up. Thanks for sharing… and I second the recommendation for grub at Guayo's El Rey… we’ve eaten there serveral times over the years, and while it the place never was much to look at, the food never disappoints.
