Absolutely disgraceful exploitation. As you say, we have already paid for these items on our vehicles. Shame on Toyota ... no surprise that we all are eagerly awaiting Ford products. Heated seats? What a joke.

https://www.thedrive.com/news/43329/toyota-made-its-key-fob-remote-start-into-a-subscription-service. Wow. Can I just say that I’m so happy at what’s included with a Ford in the price of the vehicle already? I don’t need an on star subscription to make my vehicle function through the app. Or worse, now this. I get that companies might need to charge for connected services. your keyfob is a function which 10+ years ago was just fine long before cars were connected though. What’s next? The lock/unlock won’t work if you don’t subscribe? This is almost beyond ridiculous & while I’d like to say this is proof positive that I choose the right brand for my cars, I also have to just hope that the blue oval doesn’t go down this path in th future. Some functions to your car are just basic & shouldn’t need a subscription.

As he says they have been doing this.
IMHO, worse was the spamming to sign up when the trial ran out.

But... My 2017 Ram truck had a similar thing where they added Uconnect features like voice to text msg and vehicle locator that expired after a trial. IMHO, Ram was more reasonable in the frequency of their requests to rejoin for a price.
I also thought the Ram services were more useful but too high priced.

I look at it like satellite radio, yes it's nice to have but I don't want to add the number of committed expenses I have every month.

I’ve had several ā€˜Toys’ In the past. Drove the crapola out of several.
I think they are now over priced and the Tacoma’s need all new engines and drive trains. They are so outdated in performance and mpg’s.
That frame rusting problem under the body where you can’t find it made me stop looking at the Tacoma.

While I agree that this is bogus because it isn’t like Toyota is doing anything to start it from their end, once the trials for anything in my BS stop, they stop. I won’t give Ford or anyone else a red cent in subscriptions. Remote start, satellite radio, ā€œon-starā€, or any of that isn’t worth a thing to me.

ā€˜Everything being connected all the time isn’t a good thing in my book, and not just from a security standpoint. It just isn’t needed (not even for fully electric vehicles which is the future whether anyone likes it or not ) for actual driving.

A bit off topic but in the future maybe not, but given a choice actually, I would not have installed on my Bronco Sport any of the computer controlled nannies but the adaptive cruise since they don’t work particularly well anyways. I would rather twist a key and have manual locks than subscribe to an ā€œentry and start packageā€ for the car (being absurd, but am I?) I can see Ford monetizing this stuff when ā€œblue driveā€ or whatever their self driving stuff is called comes out. Want the function? Buy a prepped vehicle and subscribe and the software will install.

Ford does this and I’ll sell my BSport no lie. Absolutely reprehensible.
