2021 Bronco sport Badlands. When opening the tailgate using the release button on the back, how far should the tailgate open?

Mine only opens an inch or so. Is that "normal" or do I have issues with the struts, etc.

Mine does the same thing. It unlocks it opens barely. Does not release it to the open position.
On the other hand mine thinks it’s not closed properly sometimes. I have to close hatch and window individually for DRL to turn off.

Your‘s about same as as mine (’21 BL). Hitting the button just gets it off the latch, if you push in the least bit as you go to raise the tailgate it goes back on the latch. Then you have to push it tightly shut to get it to unlatch again.

It's not a powered gate. The button only unlatches it. The gate has to be manually lifted no matter how you unlatch it.

I think the liftgate release button on the fob is pointless—which is likely why it was dropped for the 2023 MY. If you have enabled intelligent access and the fob is in your pocket all you have to do is touch the unlatch button on the liftgate. You have to lift the liftgate anyway, and that's where your hand naturally goes, so touching the unlatch button on the fob just adds a step to the unlatch/opening process.
