I have a 24 Badlands and have noticed in the recent very hot weather when starting out from the BS engine/transmission cold (like sitting overnight) as I am driving out of my neighborhood just below 20 mph I have experienced surging/bucking for the few minutes while in the neighborhood. I think parking in my garage is probably making it worse since the garage temperatures probably reaches over 100 degrees.
Once I am out of the neighborhood and on the main roads with 45 to 50 mph the issue goes away. The issue does not happen once the engine/transmission is warmed up even when we go out and the BS sitting for an hour or two before driving again. With the BS It only happen after the BS sits over night.

I am not asking the forum for comments on what might need to be fixed. I am only asking if anyone else has experienced this surging/bucking. I have a 2019 Edge where the issue happens more frequently and over a wider range of temperatures. There is a link to the Edge forum below where the thread about the issue is 15 pages long with complaining and some replacing parts to no avail. Ford has issued TSB's in the past to refresh the transmission and in some cases it helped a little bit. It is apparently an issue with the 8F35 transmission regardless of the Ford model.

Hi there, David. This low speed surging/bucking concern doesn’t sound like something we want you to experience with your Bronco Sport. Should you need further assistance, please send us a PM with your VIN and the name and location of your Ford dealer and I'd be happy to look into how I can assist you on my end. To send a private message, just click on our username and select "Start Conversation".

Glad the Ford monitor is available, when was the last Transmission fluid service ? Although our service manuals give mileage’s for intervals for service everything is dependent on you daily driving , roads , hills mountains, dusty areas, muddy roads or trails …all can have an impact on intervals. I do short runs as I am retired so I decrease the intervals of maintenance. Hope it is a simple fix. I did notice on my BB that using the Eco mode less often decreased the bucking and recently when on interstate using Sport also reduced
the jumping and bucking.

Ours just hit 10k, and have owned since May. It is primarily my wife’s car. When I am with her, I notice the surges pulling out of our development. My thought was it was the transmission going through the “learning” process and have not treated it as an issue that needs further action. Yet.

My BS only just hit 2000 miles so it is still brand new so would not think that a transmission fluid change would do anything and considering my experience with my 19 Edge and to a smaller extent my 20 Escape all with same 2.0L engine and 8F35 transmission it really seems like an engineering issue that affects many of the Ford models that use the same transmission. I have to say that I was very disappointed to feel the same issue in my BS as I have with my 19 Edge. This just means to me that Ford has not fixed a problem that has been occurring since they started using the 8F35 transmission.

Here is my recent post from the Ford Edge Forum. You can see the entire thread by clicking on the link at the bottom of this post. I made a link that is at the bottom of this thread and in my original post. For some reason it shows as a red number 15.

"I know this issue is very frustrating and even though it happens to many Ford models and different model years I still do not consider it "normal". I originally posted about my 2019 Edge surging/bucking at low speed which only happens when the engine/transmission was cold. (page 8: August 9, 2021). It still happens today. As always, in my case it seems to happen in the summer months when the outside temperatures are in the 90's. The issue goes away after a few minutes once I am out of my neighborhood and the Edge has warmed up. It may happen other times with cooler temperatures but not as severe. Early on there have been TSB's from Ford on the issue but as others have mentioned refreshing the transmission with the latest software did not help. I have a 20 Escape where the issue has also happened but not to the same extent as my Edge and more recently I just purchased a new 2024 Bronco Sport with the same transmission and 2.0L engine and on very hot days I have experienced the same surging/bucking issue at low speed when starting to drive off from a cold start in the neighborhood. Based on my experience of initially having the Dealer trying to flash the transmission software as Ford recommended and now having 3 Ford models manufactured in different years this is an engineering issue and will not get fixed by throwing parts at the cars. I do not know about the EGR valve where some on the forum has resolved the issue. Their surging/bucking might be different than what I experience and especially with it happening to my brand new BS I doubt it would help me. So bottom line is I do not know that there is a fix for this. Ford obviously is no longer trying to find a fix and there are many posts on the internet of others having the issue with other Ford models besides the Edge. I currently have over 40,000 miles since new on my Edge and the issue is still there but has not gotten worse. At this point I try to ignore the surging/bucking and consider it a quirk of the vehicle that happens under certain conditions and only lasts for a few minutes until I am out of the neighborhood and the car warms up. While I know this is not really an answer, as a precaution I purchased the Ford ESP plan in case the issue gets worse."

My 2015 Mustang GT with manual transmission has done this since new. It occurs every time and always in the first few blocks after a cold start. I guess the fuel mixture is adjusting. After a few blocks everything is smooth and 10 years later does not cause concern. Take it for what its worth.

Hi there! Will you send us a message with your VIN and your local Ford dealer? I can look into things on my end.

I have a 2024 Badlands as well, and notice this every time we go out of our driveway, it goes away as soon as we hit the main road which is highway speed. Our driveway is gravel, so going slow is the rule, it's a little disconcerting. We had Recall 24S24 done at the dealer before we took ownership.

It feels like hesitation, similar to what 80's cars did on ethanol fuel or a bad tune up. It only occurs when the engine has cooled down overnight, and our garage never gets above 85.

We have always run 93 octane premium in this vehicle, even made the dealer fill it with it when we left the showroom.

You're not alone.

Thank you for your reply. I felt I was not alone when I started the thread and I realize that there is probably nothing that can be done about the issue so I am just trying to find out how common the issue is. My thoughts are it is a common issue across several Ford's and years at least with the 8F35 transmission.

Ditto for me. Just after starting and driving forward has rough shift in the low gears and then it does not happen again. Always just the first shift threw the gears. Is transmission fluid pooled and just not well circulated yet?

Hi Steve! I can look into your Bronco's concern on my end. To get started, could you please send a private message over with the name/location of your local Ford dealer and your Bronco's VIN?

I've been watching this thread to see if anyone had come up with an answer. My '23 BSBL also likes to "surge" or sometimes feels like it is "falling flat on it's face" when pulling out into traffic before the engine is fully warm. It has done it at a traffic light a block away from my office before.
I had my 20,000 mile service done at the local dealer a few weeks ago and they kept it overnight but said they could not duplicate the issue. It's strange that it does it almost every time for me.
