Definitely not needed. I just like to protect it from wear & tear and any contaminants on my hands.
Seems to have more grip and the slightly larger diameter feels better to me while driving. JMO

Here in the southwest, the sun eats the dash and the steering wheel. I put a cover on mine right away.

I had the same problem on my 19’ fusion. Dealership took photos and documented and was replaced free of charge.
