Just received a letter for this Special Field Action 25L02 regarding my 24 Bronco Sport. It is in regard to repairs to the Transmission Control Assembly that may have paid out of pocket for when in fact if you lived in certain states where the California emissions warranty applies you could be due a refund because of an administrative error in the Ford warranty claim system. The California Emissions Warranty for this part is 7 years/70,000 miles.

Per AI these are the states where the California Emissions Warranty applies:
The California Emissions Warranty generally applies to vehicles registered in California and other states that have adopted its standards, including Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington, and D.C., though specific coverage (like for PZEVs) can vary by state and model year. To be covered, your vehicle must be certified to California standards (check the under-hood label) and registered in one of these states.

Posting this because in addition to the above I wonder if anyone from these other states had a repair that they had to pay for that would have been covered under the standard emission warranty period but they were out of the warranty period but would have qualified under the California emission warranty.

I just got the letter for my First Edition, and in August, I had to have the AWD Module replaced. Bummed it isn't the part covered for reimbursement.

Got my letter today for my Badlands.
I had my 4WD module replaced as well, except Ford did do a good will gesture as my vehicle is always dealer serviced.

Does anyone know what this is advising about? I had recently had my 4wd module replaced and called Ford to see if this was part of that notice and she couldn't explain it to me, but had called the dealer who said this wasn't covered. I was OK with that but no one could tell me exactly what type of error this is. I ask because on my way home tonight I was on the uphill portion the BSBL just kept revving up to 4500 not to the red, but wouldn't shift or go past 55 or so. Stayed this way for a few minutes and then eventually I got back up to speed. I got the Orange wrench of death on the dash and the look at owners manual warning, but no messages of the Ford pass app. When I got home and turned the car off for a bit the wrench went away and it drove normally. I will drive on the freeway in the morning to see if it happens again, but jeez why can't ford give an answer what it is? Any one else have this happen? It's been a fun little suv, but I'm starting to reach the end of my rope. I have never had so many $$$$$ problems

California Emissions warranty is stronger than the standard manufacturer warranty. What this notice refers to is there are certain states that follow the California Emissions warranty and Ford is required to follow the California Emission warranty for owners that live in those states. I believe the vehicles have to be certified by the manufacturer to meet the California Emissions Warranty standards. I was posting the information for those like me who do not live in California but are covered under the California warranty who might not realize that they may be covered under the California Emissions warranty.

In the specific instance of the Special Field Notice this was the issue:

Our commitment is to provide you with the highest level of service and support for any inconvenience. Our records indicate that you own or previously owned a vehicle that was or is registered in a state in which the California emissions warranty applies, which provides a7-year/70,000-mile warranty (whichever occurs first) for the Transmission Control Assembly.

What is the issue? The Transmission Control Assembly is unlikely to require a repair during the
warranty period, and your vehicle might not be one of the affected vehicles. But if your vehicle did require a repair to this component during the warranty period, you might have paid out of pocket for the repair due to an administrative error in our warranty claims system

This is a simplified explanation from AI regarding the California Emissions Warranty vs the Standard warranty.

Yes, the California emissions warranty is significantly stronger and more comprehensive than the standard Ford new car emissions warranty
offering longer coverage periods for a wider range of components. While federal law mandates an 8-year/80,000-mile warranty for major parts, California law requires 7-year/70,000-mile coverage for a broader list of emissions-related components.

Key differences between the California Emissions Warranty and the Standard/Federal Warranty:
  • Extended Coverage on Components: California requires a 7-year or 70,000-mile warranty on specific, high-cost emissions components that might only be covered for 3 years/36,000 miles under the standard warranty.
  • Longer Overall Protection: California-certified vehicles often have 10-year/150,000-mile coverage for certain critical emission control components.
  • Specific Coverage: California requires CARB-compliant aftermarket converters to be warranted for 5 years or 50,000 miles, whereas federal requirements may differ.
  • Coverage Applicability: This stronger warranty applies specifically to vehicles originally manufactured for sale in California or in states that have adopted California’s stricter standards.
While standard Ford warranties cover major emissions components for 8 years/80,000 miles, California's regulations ensure more parts are covered for a longer time.

Our BSBL had the orange wrench and is now getting a new transmission, just 25k miles. In December they thought it was just a low battery, so we got a new AGM battery at $0.
