Hey guys, all of the sudden mid drive today I noticed a continuous loud screeching sound from what I’m most certain is the rear right side of my bronco sport outer banks. When I got home there was also a burning smell as if something had been rubbing together leading me to believe something with the breaks. I’m not too sure but I was hoping someone here would maybe know the issue? This also doesn’t happen when breaking only accelerating.

Possible shredding/slipping accessary drive belt due to faulty water pump leaking coolant onto said belt. Check your coolant tank level. Either way, a trip to the dealer seems in order.

It sounds like a slipping belt, as James said.

Brake lock up or engine belt would be on my first suspect list to have checked.

If it's really the right rear, it's not the drive belt. Can you pull the right rear wheel off and inspect the brakes?

Sounds can be difficult to localize. The source may not be the right rear.

"This also doesn’t happen when breaking only accelerating" -- indicates that the brakes are not the problem.

A drive belt OTOH will often slip and squeal when accelerating.

Of course it may be something else entirely. It's difficult to diagnose problems from a distance.

If it is a dragging brake, there is a good way to diagnose that. After driving a reasonable distance, you can check the temperature of the rear rotors. If one is much hotter than the other, you have a dragging brake. Obviously you should not touch the rotors. Having an infrared thermometer gun is very handy for this kind of thing and they are pretty cheap. You aren’t really concerned about getting an accurate reading, just looking for a relative difference from one to the other.

All that being said, from the description it does not sound like a brake issue. Tracking a noise can be very hard to do from inside the vehicle though. Not sure exactly how the OP is tracking the sound but it is easy to be fooled from inside the vehicle.
