Has anyone had any success with something this like? Seeing quite a few different brands on Amazon with reviews saying too small for receiver and moves around. Would like to have one but not if the fit is gonna leave it rattling around.

Can a hitch pin in the receiver with a strap or soft shackle around the pin be used as a recovery point?

Yes, but there is some question about the severity of the bend in the shackle that may cause the shackle to break, and whether the hitch pin can take the stress when used in that fashion. If you bend the hitch pin it will take some work to get it out.

There are at least two companies offering receiver mounts specifically for use with soft shackles.

Yes, that can work. There are some additional considerations though:

* If it is not close to a straight-line pull, the strap will be in contact with the inside edge of the receiver and could be abraded or cut. Some people file the inside edge of the receiver so it is less likely to damage a strap.

* I've read that some pins may bend when used that way. It seems unlikely to me, but if I planned to do that I'd research it more.

All BS trim levels without the tow package have a treaded hole for a tow eye, and should have a tow eye from the factory. After all, the owner's manual says the tow eye must be carried at all times (p.265).

The primary reason I asked the dealer to give us the shackle hitch was to replace the tow eye, which was deleted by the tow package. For normal recoveries, the tow eye is fine.

That said, the Curt unit is not that expensive -- ~$38:

Maybe less elsewhere.
