Sure this has been beat up previously but I am new to the new bronco game. I have had a few broncos and they have always been registered as SW. Now they skipped right past SUV and went straight to truck. Mo money for PennDOT and less money for me. When did they switch classification ? Was it right from the beginning of the new era ?

"In the state of Pennsylvania, the Bronco Sport is legally a multipurpose vehicle (MPV). MPVs include SUVs, crossovers, wagons, vans, etc.

To be registered as a passenger car, an MPV must meet all of the following:

  1. Full‑size seats for at least 4 people
  2. Windows on both sides and rear
  3. Not designed as a mobile dwelling
  4. Not designed, used, or maintained primarily for transporting property
The Bronco Sport fails #4 in PA’s interpretation.

Why?
Because the Bronco Sport has:

  • a cargo‑oriented rear area
  • fold‑flat seats
  • rubberized cargo flooring
  • tie‑downs
  • utility rails
  • “Cargo management system”
  • marketing and design emphasizing utility/off‑road use
PA DOT interprets this as “designed for transportation of property”, which disqualifies it from passenger‑car registration.

Thus, under §41.3(e):

A multipurpose vehicle that does not qualify as a passenger car must be registered as a truck. "
So, in essence, because the backend of the BS has a built-in cargo management system (the grocery sack hooks), tie-downs, and a rubberized cargo flooring, that qualifies it as a truck.

Never underestimate the stubborn capriciousness of an entrenched bureaucracy. You could argue #4 keying on one word: "primarily".

It's not just the Bronco Sport, though:

This same rule causes:

  • Jeep Wrangler
  • Ford Bronco
  • Bronco Sport
  • Toyota 4Runner
  • Subaru Outback (sometimes)
  • Chevy Blazer
  • GMC Terrain
  • Many crossovers
to be registered as trucks in Pennsylvania.

It’s not about:

  • GVWR
  • frame type
  • towing
  • size
  • off‑road capability
It’s purely about how PA defines “passenger car” vs. “multipurpose vehicle.”

I really wanted a Mach-e back when there were tax credits to be had. They were getting cheap to buy, and are a hoot to drive, and cost pennies on the dollar to operate compared to my truck at the time. But, Tennessee heaped an additional $250 registration fee on top of the regular plate tax and license fee "to compensate for lost gas tax revenue" even though EVs charging at home already pay that to the electric company through their fuel use, and pay even more if they use public chargers that run off the diesel generators. I ran the numbers to compare my own mileage from 2024, how much would have been spent in gas tax, and compared it to what I would have been charged in EV registration fees, and after driving like 19,500 miles in 2024, that amounted to roughly $48 in gas tax.

It's bureaucratic BS.

What do you call 1,000 lawyers at the bottom of the ocean?

A good start!

That’s “primarily” what politicians are, lawyers. So, it makes perfect sense to me.

In PA I'll tell you that the money isnt going into fixing the roads. I have had dented wheels, tire blowouts, lost a chunk of my hurricane 2s ( if you remember those ) and to top it off I have been ticketed for swerving to avoid potholes. :explode:

That is funny, because My cousin was the chief of police in Harrisburg for several years. He is retired now.
