Unfortunately I don’t have much info to how this happened, I’ve had my bronco since July and love it.

I don’t use sport mode often but am familiar with the higher rpm gear shifts. Leaving work today while I’m normal mode, while on a phone call, light turns green, I accelerate and hear the engine whining, I look at the tach and it’s close to 6,000 which is a little above what is normal for sport mode. I instantly take my foot off the pedal stop talking and check to see what’s going on…
Any thoughts to what may have caused this? Ran normal after this ??‍♂

Sure you didn't accidentally hit the manual button on the gear selector?
That is a possibility, I did not put it in drive to correct. I took my foot off the pedal then accelerated again. Both hands were on the wheel due to ice and snow, plus I was talking on the phone.

Drive it for a bit and see if it happens again.
Most likely you inadvertently hit a paddle on the steering wheel, I know this can happen because I’ve done it myself.

If the car shifts normally otherwise (as best as an 8 speed with skip shifts can) I would chalk it up as just a one time error

Yes that’s it!!! I recall possibly hitting the left paddle but did not think it was activated unless in manual. That brings relief, thanks!

Makes sense for sure , when they came to a stop it then would revert to normal shift mode .

I have noticed while cruising in Eco mode, if I try to pass or change lanes quickly and press the accelerator, there is a delay and then a sudden, uncomfortable and unwanted high-RPM surge. I think the computer sees my right-foot demand for more power and can't help itself -- but has to overcome its initial resistance to it in Eco mode. As I demand power and nothing happens, I demand more -- and the BS is trying to catch up!? As such I chalk this up to a quirk in its Eco mode behavior under sudden throttle demands, particularly while in cruise control. I think it should just switch out of cruise faster -- as it doesn't behave this way in Eco when NOT in cruise control. But now it's expected, I just have to remember to get my foot out of the accelerator when the RPMS take off on me in this situation. OR just deactivate cruise first -- but I like it for maintaining my following distance in heavy traffic. Perhaps I should just stay in my lane?

I think this is expected behavior. In ECO mode the PCM wants to keep the engine at the lowest possible RPM to increase fuel economy. At the same time, ECO mode does not limit maximum power output, you just have to step harder on the pedal to get it.
