I ripped the carpet "skid plate" off the first time I went off road. The evap has a metal skid plate, but the gas lines don't.
I put the JCR skid on. Look back at my posts, I detailed the difficulties I had and the solutioins. If I'd known then what I know now, it would have been much easier.
I've purchased the cat skid plate but havent' had time to put it on yet. I went to the Moab Off-Rodeo and you could hear the bottoom rubbing on grass (and other things) between the ruts. On a short wheelbase vehicle like the BS, a 1-1/2" lift makes a big difference.
I've taken my BS BL on some really rough desert roads. Not a lot of rock, but some serious erosion. Only once did the approach angle become an issue when crossing an arroyo. I took it slow, backed up and did a little shovel work. Actually, I use a Pulaski. much more versatile than a shovel. I've put a 1-1/2" lift on since then.
When my Falken tires wear out, I'll try to put on a taller tire. I don't care much about width, but I like more rubber between me and the rocks. I'm thinking I might get away with a 235/75 R17. Falken came out with an AT4, and I'd consider that if I were buying new. Very happy with the Falkens.
I have taken my BS through mud, snow, rock, and dirt, and never had to turn back because it wasn't capable, and It's never been stuck.
