So, I live in the Raleigh area of NC. I have gone to a mechanic in the area that is top rated. He refuses to fix my BS usually stating "I'm wasting my money" or "there is nothing wrong." Drives me insane.
I down shifted on the highway going 71 on cruise control once and noticed some hard shifting when stuck in traffic. Mechanic test drove it and asked me about the grinding noise when turning. From the forum and owning it, it is a known issue. He refers me to a transmission guy. The transmission guy is known to always recommend replacing the transmission. Literally, every vehicle brought in, regardless of why. I am thinking maybe I should go to the dealership but I really don't want to go to the dealership because honestly, I don't trust them, but has anyone else dealt with this? Would it be worth it going to the dealership or should I find a new mechanic?

Find new mechanics! Grinding while turning could be your RDU (which is a fairly common issue). Cheers!

I have never had issues with my current dealership. At a previous dealership I caught a porter doing burnouts in the service bay with my Mustang GT. That cost them a set of tires and they lost my business.

Find a new mechanic.

I've learned dealerships are always going to be more expensive. They have expertise and training for that specific car. But that doesn't mean they're going to do right by the customer nor are they going to be able to solve without replacing everything along the way.

If the grinding sound is being caused by the RDU, there are TSB's that could address the problem. In your case, going to a Ford dealer is the only way to take advantage of a possible remedy.

Is your Sport still under warranty? if so all the more reason to take it to the dealer.

I’ve got a terrific shop here in the Valley (Sun Devil Auto) that I’ve been using for a number of months now. Cheaper than a dealer and honest to a fault.

I’ll give my local dealer a chance when the time comes, but will watch them like a hawk.

That's a tough decision with modern vehicles. Luckily, the local dealers for the two brands I own have good service departments. Not surprisingly, they are part of the same group, one 16 miles away, the other 25. I'd absolutely take it to the dealer if the warranty was still in effect. If it wasn't, I'd have to do some hard thinking about what to do, especially if I'd had a less than stellar experience with the dealer.

Warranty is long gone.
