Yesterday coming down a highway down a mountain that is steep for a couple miles, I decided to try L mode which I had never used before. I was going roughly 45mph but it threw the RPM up over 4,000. Is that normal?
Thanks

Yes, that's normal.

"L" on the BS doesn't exactly mean what it would in other cars. It doesn't actually put it in 1st and keep it there. Even in manual mode, it won't really keep the gear you set it to.

But it does mean "downshift and keep rpms high". That's useful in a lot of situations.

Unfortunately, it will still shift up at low speeds, so "L" doesn't help much off-road for descents at sub 5mph. I really wish it did.

However, it will keep things in a lower gear at speed, which is useful to get some engine breaking white going down a mountain pass on the highway. Similarly, if you're in a steep climb, it will try to hold the lower gear instead of shifting when it normally would.

you can also use sport mode as shift points are way higher for long donhill decents ive tried both methods in fact both work except sport will be better at holding downhill speeds at higher speeds. L is more for lower speeds like under 30 and can help braking on stops you want more than wear out brakes in my experience
