Do you have to get the tow package for the full-sized spare in the Badlands? I thought I read somewhere that the full-sized spare was standard for all Badlands models.

by full size spare, it's the 225. I ordered the 235 upgrade, the spare is smaller, but a full 225
SO your daily use are Falken 235 but they provided a Scorpion 225 spare?

Didn't know that. I thought it matches the other 4.
Nope! 225 scorpion. Agreed, seems lame but on a steel rim anyways so it can’t be brought off the bench in the rotation unless one of the other four gets hurt.

I plan on picking up a take off when (if) one comes up on eBay locally.

I just got by Bad Lands last Tuesday. It came with the Wildpeak 235/65/17 upgrade but the smaller Pirelli Scorpion spare, which I swapped at Discount Tires yesterday so it matches the other 4.

No you get a 225 spare even when the 235 tires are factory installed.

I take it the 235 fits fine in the spare location (ie no need to customize the area or remove anything)?

Yes. The 235x65R17 spare fits in the well with about 1/4 inch to spare.

I think the reason for the full sized spare is to get you home if you damage a tire or roll a deflated tire off its rim while enjoying an off-road experience. At that point you would purchase the new matching tire. The Badlands is set up as the more capable off-road vehicle and the full size spare - even if not identical- just completes the package.

Ford will swap the 225 spare for the 235. You need one that’ll work with your vehicle. They have to be same size or will wreck your diff with an awd vehicle.

I don't think this is accurate. The "Intelligent 4WD" system installed in the Bronco Sport can tell when you are using dissimilar sized tires and will disable the 4WD system to prevent damage. In the section of your Owner's Manual titled Information Displays, Four-Wheel Drive, you'll see listed a message that reads "4WD Off" when you are using a spare.

Further, there's an entire section in the Owner's Manual titled Dissimilar Spare Wheel and Tire Assembly Information. If you read through it you'll find it doesn't include any warnings about vehicle damage when using dissimilar sized tires. The manual lists several restrictions on the use of dissimilar spare wheel/tire (speed restrictions, no towing, loss of 4wd capability, etc.), but they are related to driving safety, not mechanical damage.

These are very smart systems; they protect themselves from stupid owner tricks quite well.
