Are our expectations reasonable?

Hi,

My old SUV is getting ready to be passed down to my son (07 Highlander) and the BS BB looks to be about exactly what I am looking for.

I read the forums here and elsewhere, and people are so worked up over a "delay" on their order. Maybe my expectations are out of whack from not having bought a vehicle in so long, but.... Seems pretty incredible that you can order exactly what you want, watch your actual vehicle go through the line as its built, and get what is essentially your personalized build done in 6months.

Seems a modern manufacturing miracle that you can hatch your own personal vehicle within 6 months.
But then again, I am older. I remember when there was no internet and you had what was at your dealer, what was close enough to drive to on a weekend to see if someone else had it on their lot, or you could try calling around. And if you had a really good dealer THEY would call around and try and do a vehicle swap to get in what you wanted IF they could find something close enough to your preferred specs.

I'll add to that: your own custom vehicle ordered and delivered in 6 months in the middle of a global pandemic with massive supply chain issues around not only microchips and parts but also labor and vehicle shortages with shipping and delivery.

Honestly I think it's all pretty awesome to be able to say "this is my car, I picked every single little feature" (I added an engine block heater despite living in Virginia, a place where I will not need it, just in case! Why not!).

People’s expectations are unreasonable. Like others have said between the human cost of the pandemic, allocating materials and actually building the things and shipping them I think they’re doing a good job. It is remarkable how much work from start to finish goes into one ultimately insignificant vehicle.

It seems like people in the 1/24 and 1/31 production groups will get there cars as scheduled which is good. I know not everyone has been that lucky.

That said waiting always sucks and I’ve been impatiently waiting for my order which thankfully will be here soon enough.

If I couldn’t afford to or didn’t want to wait, well there’s plenty of dealerships who will take your money today.

Might come in 4 months, maybe 6, maybe 9 months or longer. Might get a scheduled build date in two months, maybe 6 months maybe longer. Your dealer may or may not be a priority for Ford or maybe they are. Your vehicle might go down assembly line pass QC get put on a train shipped. Or might get built fail QC get sent to a lot to sit for six months. Might take 3 weeks to ship might take 6 or longer. Most sports show up undamaged and in good working order. Some times things happen. So its all hit and miss. If you are looking for a specific build options and are picky and willing to wait ordering may be for you. Right now thousands new Fords across all models sitting in lots missing chips. So the global vehicle shortage crisis across all manufacturers is still a major issue with no end in sight. One day this will all pass but not any time soon.

All depends on what you are used too. I’ve been ordering cars for nearly 50 years. I’ve had the benefit of having a father that worked for Ford so I always got the plan discount. He also knew most of the GM’s at the local dealerships. What is going on now is not normal. Typically I could submit an order and have my vehicle in less than three months depending on where the model year change over fell. Now, there have been issues before that caused delays but nothing like today. The biggest issue for me really is the allocation process and changes midstream. This has affected my 2 door order more so than the sport but I’m beginning to wonder if that is in play as well here. In any case, I am fortunate to be in the Midwest where I can use Granger Motors as my dealer.

Definitely not a typical buyer.

Completely agree with the Allocation and Pivoting discussion.
Though I am "lucky" to still have a year before my buy probabably.

In normal times, you can expect 2-3 months for a custom order vehicle assuming it’s not something in extremely high demand. I never got preferential treatment regarding delivery time, only the price I paid.

If you aren't really ready to buy for another year, you're just kicking tires. A lot can change in a years time.

Luckily I got my BS in March of 21 just before the effects of the chip shortage, the dealer had a few on the lot to choose from and no dealer mark ups. My how things can change in only a few months.

Wire to wire, once it gets here because I’m on SoCal, my order will have taken just under 3mo….that’s not bad.

In general I agree with you. I ordered September 24th and picked up my Badlands on February 2nd. It's missing a few small things that we thought were going to be included - but only cosmetic things. Otherwise it's exactly as I wanted and more! But we had a slight delay due to a chip issue. Some who ordered last spring had a much longer wait time. I was lucky and my wait time was totally within the window they quoted. But if I had ordered last spring and watched while my vehicle sat in the dessert for months on end waiting for parts I would have certainly been distressed :( I totally get that frustration on their part.

But like I said - overall I agree with you. In a pandemic with parts shortages, supply chain issues, labor issues, etc. I'm thrilled that I was able to get my new BS-BL ?

I’ve been ordering my vehicles for over 40 years. I’ve never considered looking at stock.

I was pretty lucky with my 2022 BS BB that I bought. I live in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico and went to Guadalajara to get my Bronco. The various trim levels were available except for the badlands. Those were all spoken for and had a waiting list. One thing the salesman did tell me was that Ford discriminates as far as shipments to dealers go. At least they do in Mexico anyway. The big dealers in the larger cities will generally get their cars sooner than the smaller dealerships in the smaller areas. That is one of the reasons why I had to go to Guadalajara to get it instead of buying it at the Ford dealership in PV. That and the fact that the dealership here is crap. The dealership here in PV didn’t have anything and likely wouldn’t for several more months. While I was in Guadalajara last week taking delivery on my Bronco, another truckload of broncos showed up to be unloaded at the dealership. I don’t know if the fact that all Broncos are made at the Ford plant in Saltillo, Mexico has anything to do with it but that’s a possible reason why there are such delays getting them into the US.
