So, is the center console painted over plastic?

I usually keep a set of keys in one of the cup holders and it appears that the top edges of the cup holders are scratching off and showing white beneath. ?

It’s not like I throw the keys at the cup holder, I simply drop them in when I have that extra ring of keys with me…. And that’s enough to do it?? Really??

If this is the case, I’m absolutely amazed that the center console isn’t molded in one solid color.

It would not surprise me if it was painted. Molded in color is not the Panecea it would seem to be. We’ve had mix success over the years and most parts we make are now painted. That being said, I don’t know which way Ford is making it. We’ve had better luck with parts matching when painted with certified colored paint vs. parts made with certified colored plastic.

I’m in the molding biz and understand that painted surfaces can be more easily matched for consistency but, at the expense of durability seems surprising.

I guess I had expected a bit more durability. I’m very easy on my BS and did not expect to see this sort of wear. Live and learn. Nothing more than coffee cups in the cup holders, I guess.

I had similar concerns so when the car was very new, I made a vinyl sticker to both help with edge rubbing and also to make the cupholder space better match the transmission controls. Nothing is what it used to be.
