This doesn't make sense to me. If I recall, the water pump is installed below the alternator. I don't have a 1.5L engine, so I can't go check. Can anyone confirm? So…this is exactly what the dealership initially told me and sent videos of. However while “making sure”, it turned into “the water pump is leaking onto the alternator, which damaged the alternator.” So now it is a $2500 repair out of nowhere…
Mark…thank you! This doesn't make sense to me. If I recall, the water pump is installed below the alternator. I don't have a 1.5L engine, so I can't go check. Can anyone confirm?
Thanks everybody for your replies. The alternator on the 1.5L engine is located above and to the side of the water pump.
It is impossible for the water pump to leak directly onto the alternator.
If I were you I would demand they give you the "failed" alternator. I'm overwhelmingly skeptical that a water pump leaking so badly it is "spraying" an alternator installed above it, yet doesn't leave any coolant on the ground. Doesn't pass the smell test...Thanks everybody for your replies.
I dig further at the dealership and was told the water pump leak was spraying the alternator, and that is what caused the issue. They say that the alternator is not testing consistently and goes in and out.
I’m not that mechanically knowledgeable… nor have a lot of time/resources to run this all over getting other opinions, so I went for the repair.
It was supposed to be done today, but now they are telling me that the alternator they received from Ford as a replacement is ALSO defective and they need to wait for another.
Not going well…haha.
Not being argumentative but there are owner reports of 1.5L water pumps that were defective (“leaking”) however the owners stated no coolant was ever seen on the ground — instead they noticed the under hood insulation was holding the coolant spray. So it does seem plausible the leak could spray towards the alternator. Perhaps the 1.5L owners should fashion up some sort of shield to prevent a water pump spray from reaching the alternator… would be a good aftermarket item something JC Whitney would want to carry — over 400,000 potential customers ?If I were you I would demand they give you the "failed" alternator. I'm overwhelmingly skeptical that a water pump leaking so badly it is "spraying" an alternator installed above it, yet doesn't leave any coolant on the ground. Doesn't pass the smell test...
Sure you are! There's nothing wrong with that. This forum is for sharing information; if someone has it wrong we should correct them, and that includes me!Not being argumentative but...
Hmmm. I missed those posts. If that's the case then it seems to me the smell of coolant would be overwhelming. @JRav007, have you been smelling coolant? Can you open the hood of your car and take a sniff? If your water pump is spraying coolant everywhere you should be able to smell it. It's kind of a sickly-sweet smell.instead they noticed the under hood insulation was holding the coolant spray.
