Hey ya’lll. Need some advice. …
a few months ago the water pump failed on my 2022 bronco sport Outer banks edition and was replaced. ( I had noticed the car was not heating up and then saw the coolant level was completely empty.- no sign of leaks anywhere)
The other day as I was sitting idling in my work parking lot getting ready to leave for the day , I see the wrench symbol light up on my instrument cluster. i logged into the app and it shows Powertrain Malfunction/Reduced Power . thankfully, it’s 5pm and the dealer is literally across the street so I drive the car over there. To be honest I wasn’t sure I was going to make it because I couldn’t go over 20 mph and it felt like the car was going to stall the whole way.
I get to the dealer and explain the situation to them and they look at it yesterday and say it is a High Pressure fuel pump that has failed. My concern is this…; could there also be an issue with the Powertrain and they are only seeing the fuel pump as the issue ? My car has been idling rough before the water pump went, and has not gotten any better even before this. Is there something else I need to be telling the dealer to look for ? I’m at 43K miles and want to have the concerns fixed before the warranty is up. Thanks in advance.

The high pressure fuel pump is located on the top of the engine and is an easy replacement. These sometimes do fail. This should not affect the rest of the engine or transmission.

What brand of fuel and octane level have you been using?

If the fuel pump is failing, then it will cause all of those symptoms you've described since it's not providing enough fuel for the engine to run properly.

Even if you worry that there was another problem too, the fuel pump is still bad and needs to be replaced, so it only makes sense to do that and see if it solves the problem. Since it does cause those signs, and since it is showing that is the fault, I'm willing to be that it will fix the problem.

Thanks for responding. I am hoping this will take care of the issue. I may think about trading it before the 60k is up. I have a relative that works at the stamping plant so I can maybe get in on a good deal in the fall.

As the person previously states, if the dealership made a determination based only on your descriptions and the codes in your app, you should request that the techs do a full scan for error codes. The codes received in the app are filtered and basic.
Your Powertrain warranty should still be good.
