Yes that "trick" does work playing the brake. Honestly it's easier just hitting the off button. Just seems like a wasted feature. Even read reports stating it's probably saving pennies of gas. Once I get back in my daily routine I will try a week actively using it and one not using it for a tank of gas.
If I recall correctly, auto stop/start feature was to help Ford meet EPA CAFE standards to reduce carbon emissions, not necessarily to improve mileage.

Yeah I believe that's the intent. Is what it is. Sometimes I remember to shut it off sometimes I just let it do it's thing.

Auto start/stop was my greatest concern when I ordered my 2017 Ford Escape. I quickly learned it wasn’t an issue, at least for me. I figured correctly that Ford knew what they were doing, and if it meant producing a bit less pollution, I was all in. I understand a single vehicle wouldn’t have much impact but when spread across the fleet it’d have greater impact.

I’m not a tree hugger by any stretch of the imagination, but I kinda like not polluting the air when I’m at a long stop light. The gas savings isn’t enough to even mention. One poster said there are no emissions at idle once the cat converter warms up, so I’d invite him to come breathe my tailpipe exhaust when I’m stopped for a minute or so with the engine running.

I saw an article a while back that battery manufacturers were miffed that they weren’t getting batteries replaced as quickly as they were promised, probably due to most people shutting it off.

My wife’s Wrangler has the feature, and it “clunks” when starting. My BL by comparison is seamless. I sometimes don’t even notice it.

Im pretty sure the economics of the entire system don’t play out. Absent the EPA and it’s mandates no manufacturer would do this.

I do like the auto start/stop in the bronco sport. it is pretty quiet, quick etc. however I still will always turn it off once i'm driving. I like knowing if I need to mash the throttle or something its gonna go quickfast without any hesitation.
and yes, it's true. the auto industry is going electric whether we like it or not. one of the reasons I opted for a 3 cylinder. I hate paying for fuel.
my other ride (sitting) is a 1988 dodge power ram v8 4x4. every time I turn the key it's like $20.00. breaks my heart haha.

I'm not disagreeing with you at all. You have a 2017. I'm honestly concerned more long term, though four years you might think something would start to manifest by now. Guess we will see. As others have said it's truly unobtrusive, half the time I don't even realize it kicked off or restarted, it's really subtle. It just seems like a lot of starts on that motor. Then again it's always 'been said' one of the harshest cycles is public service vehicles sitting in long idle and the damage it does...so maybe in the end the auto start and stop isn't all bad.

kbroderick: this is just slightly off topic, but just for info, the BS (at least my Badlands) comes with an "Auto Hold" button on the center console. When activated, every time you stop, you can take your foot off the brake pedal and Auto Stop keeps the brakes applied until you press on the accelerator. I've used it a couple times and find it kinda handy, especially in those traffic back-ups where it's a lot more "stop" and not so much "go".

Sorry that it's taking so long to get your BS. I'm sure you'll enjoy it once it arrives.
I've used that feature as well. I like it but not sure if it's truly needed, plus I'm still leary about running into the vehicle in front of me if it somehow disengages.

Do you think the automatic braking would kick in then? I’m also worried about not getting in the habit of lifting my foot off the brake for the times I drive my wife’s Wrangler

Curious if anyone knows if the BS has a separate battery to run the vehicle while its in stop mode? I personally don't like auto start stop after realizing on my wife's Range Rover it had a separate battery literally in-between the firewall and engine compartment. It failed so we just ignored the fact that start stop didn't work. Battery and labor would have been over a 1k bucks for what looked like a lawn mower size battery.

I think it's that it's a feature Ive never had before so I don't trust that it's failsafe.

I'd bet not. That sounds like a very Range Rover solution; I'm pretty sure Ford's solution is just to kick off high-drain stuff if they think they can get away with it, and kick the vehicle back on as necessary. I know 100% that the F-150s don't have a second battery. If I had time, I'd look at the FordParts listings for batteries to verify, but if I start pulling up car schematics someone might notice that I got distracted.

The 2.7L EB F-150s have had AS/S since 2016 and the 3.5 EB got it in 2017. The bitching on the forums is still theoretical, so I'm guessing the engineers managed to build a feature that works for its intended purpose (which, as someone else noted, is gaining a slight edge in EPA testing to meet CAFE numbers).

I'd bet that Ford dropped the tow mirrors from the F-150 "max tow" package for similar reasons—if a package meets a certain percentage of unit sales, it gets factored into the CAFE numbers. The tow mirrors involve a measurable MPG hit, so Ford doesn't want them included on the CAFE tests and just made them a separate option.
