I am currently in the middle of a 2,500 mile road trip and have developed an unusual noise. It initial felt like first gear was slipping on take off from a dead start. It would not do it all the time, but now it's doing more. I had a friend listen outside and he said it seems like its coming from the rear. At speed there is no noise straight and turning. Transmission shifts normally. When I press the 4wd lock button and accelerate the noise goes away. Any ideas?

No power should go to the rear wheels unless they are slipping or you have selected 4WD lock. This sounds like a problem that will require a shop visit.

Power does go to the rear wheels momently when starting from a dead stop. Select the intelligent 4wd screen that shows where power is sent. You will notice power is sent to the rear even with no slip. when I can get it on a lift ill check the RDU fluid for metal. But before that Ill check the center drive shaft u-joint and CV Joints and carrier bearing. Its actually sounding more like that.

I have an appointment on Wednesday with my local dealer. I am leaning towards the u-joint in the center of the rear driveshaft. Ill let every one know what it turns out to be. When I bought the vehicle (out of state) it came with a third party lifetime unlimited mileage powertrain warranty with a $100 deductible per repair. If that's all it costs, ill be happy.
