There’s no question the hood insulation makes a sound difference. Added it to my 21 Big Bend.
Engine cover is only important if you like the feeling of seeing something like an engine when you pop the hood.
Aeroskin II and no question that it deflects bugs as intended. Like many, I can easily log hwy trips at 30 mpg so I seriously doubt there’s any mpg cost.
Here’s a bug that was too fat to clear the deflector:
I see a number of folks who have rigged their vehicles for sleeping. I assumed that with all the open tailgate pics of mattresses and so forth that that was how they crawled in/out of bed. But then it occured to me that so far as I can tell, there’s no way to open the tailgate from the inside...
There is no access cover on the front bumper because there is no screw-in point on the front bumper Like the rear. Badlands type recovery hooks can be added to the front but it looked like a complicated process.
Re starter wear and tear, I’m under the impression that it doesn’t use the starter to restart. Instead it fires whatever cylinder is in the best position to turn the engine over fairly instantly.
This is a good thread since I’ve always wondered what possible use keyless entry could be. And this prompted me to actually go out and reprogram the code and try it a few times. Yes, it does work but will I remember the open/lock sequence tomorrow?
This reminds me a bit of the recent thread...
Just passed my April 30 anniversary and second your comments wholeheartedly with the exception of the snow experience. My first new car since 76 Fiat 128……
Wow, I called last week to see about time to do the oil separator and brake pads if available. The Ford letter said to expect about a 1/2 day; the dealer said to plan on 5 days! I passed but admit I sniff the hood now and again to check for any oil smell.
Thanks to this thread I looked at my BB bought April 30 last year and saw this switch for the first time. I could think of no good use for it but my wife thought the grocery pickup thing was marvelous even though we don’t do that. Ford’s got some marketing savvy apparently.
In the first place, the engine without the engine cover looks more like the old ball of twine in the kitchen utility drawer. And secondly, I suspect the chipmonks leaving nuts all over the engine might be distracted by the sight of all those tasty wires without the cover.
Ditto virtually everything already mentioned with emphasis on “big” feel yet small turning radius and dimensions. Already planning trade up if they do hybrid version.
Attended the Atlanta Auto Show yesterday. I think it probably hit its covid low in terms of vehicle participation but very prominently displayed under the the hood of a Subie Forester was a large engine cover! All that and a chance to play in the puppy corral.
Hood insulation is for sound and does make some difference. Didn’t come on Big Bend. Engine cover is for optics. It’s not pretty under there but what the heck, I’m still trying to get my head around the three cylinder thing.
I don’t doubt your mileage drop but I do doubt the deflector is the reason. I’ve got probably 5,000 miles with the deflector and I have no problem doing 30 mpg at 75 or so just like before.
I also know that when shopping for a BS I told a dealer that I would buy the one off his lot if he would...
