Update to the update: 1200km driven since returned from the trip and unloaded the gear. In that time with general commuting and everyday city/rural combined driving the BB is is providing 7.7L/100km or 30.5473 US MPG!!!

My thoughts too, however with the extended warranty option I could see close to $3k. My previous Escape had the entire front suspension replaced under the extended program. Cost me $100.00 as opposed to the $2700.00 repairs. I was thankful for that!
