Probably more common in hotter areas. I used to see them a lot growing up. My Grand parents had them in their cars. There used to be OEM offerings for dash covers from 80s-90s.

I like the MAD Bronco Lettering where they matched them with the color of the vehicle. I bet it would cost a lot just to get the letters painted in Area 51 though.

Dash covers used to be pretty common. They were used to help block the sun so the dash wouldn't cook and crack. Or they'd be used to cover up a cracked dash.
