I’ve searched for this everywhere and can’t find a solution. My wife and I both have our phones paired to my 2025 bronco sports Badland sync 4.0. Whenever she’s in the car, her phone is the one that’s given priority connection and I can’t figure out how to change this. It’s slowly driving me insane.

The only way I found to do it is to do it manually to go Home, settings, phone list, and select my phone over hers every time otherwise hers just connects first any thoughts on this? I haven’t been able to find a solution. There used to be a priority phone selection in previous versions of sync, I haven’t found one in Sync 4.0.

I think in that instance is whichever phone is "seen" first on entry. That seems to be the case with ours. The fix then is to just make sure you get in the car first. I'm sure the wife will understand why you're not getting the door for her anymore. ;)

Maybe the order they were paired in? Unpair both and try, yours first...might help.
Good ideas but unfortunately I tried both of those. Unpaired both, paired mine first, paired mine last. Someone else suggested it might be alphabetical based on phone name. Anyway everything so far has resulted in random results. I just want to pick which phone is the primary if both are present and I don’t think you can currently .

I'm seeing this in multiple places, but AI lies.

How to Set or Change the Favorite/Primary Phone
  1. On the SYNC 4 touchscreen, go to Settings (gear icon or via the feature bar) → Phone (or Phone List / Connectivity → Bluetooth).
  2. Select a paired phone from the list.
  3. Tap the info/settings icon (i or gear) next to it.
  4. Toggle Favorite Phone, Primary, or Dual Phone options as needed (exact labels can vary slightly by software version).

Yeah that’s a lie. That option doesn’t exist anymore. It used to but I don’t think it was ever in Sync 4 😢

@pixipush, I believe you are on the right path. Go to CarPlay on your phones, delete the bluetooth connection and start over.

I just tried to change the name of my phone to be alphabetically ahead of my wife's phone name. No change :( hers seems to connect in front of mine or it's random. Ugh...

What are the 2 phone types?

For example iPhone 17 Pro

It is possible to insert a delay on your wife’s phone (depending on what type of phone it is) so that it delays its Bluetooth connection

@pixlpush
Android: You can use third-party applications like Bluetooth Auto Connect to set specific parameters. These apps let you delay or schedule when the phone connects to devices (e.g., waiting a certain amount of time after turning Bluetooth on, or triggering connections based on screen unlocks).

iOS (iPhone): Apple's iOS is highly restricted for security reasons. You cannot natively delay Bluetooth connections. However, you can use the built-in Shortcuts app to create custom automations. While you cannot natively add a "wait" condition for the actual connection, you can create a shortcut to delay the audio output or toggle Bluetooth off/on at specific times or locations - I would look into using the latter function for controlling the connection in a vehicle

Mine is an iPhone 14 Pro Max and hers is an iPhone 15

Good suggestions. I already have a shortcut on mine to keep it from immediately playing music when it connects to CarPlay. That doesn’t always seem to work. I wonder if it is part of the problem? I may disable that and see what happens.

I’m hesitant to do anything to her phone. If I do any future problems she ever has will immediately be because of “something I did to her phone” for the rest of time 😆. In fairness to her, her concern with me fiddling with things is not without precedent. I’m an early adopter and she’s a technophobe. The struggle is real 😐

50 years from now when you by her an iPhone 65, she will still say “Remember what you did to my iPhone 15?” I feel ya bruh! Lol

Yes definitely disable the shortcut on your iPhone

Also just to be on the safe side delete both iPhones off Sync in the vehicle then add only your iPhone and check to be sure it connects quickly without your shortcut

Add your wife’s phone at a later date and see what happens, her 15 just might be quicker at connecting

iPhones always connects Bluetooth first then CarPlay and it’s a race condition with those 2 iPhones

I have the opposite problem, she can’t do anything technical so I do all of it but of course I’m blamed for everything 😉
