Hey everyone,

Looking to see if anyone else has dealt with this or has any advice.

My USB-C port in my 2021 Bronco Sport is basically failing. I have to physically “jimmy” the cable to get a connection, and right now I’ve got duct tape wedged under it just to keep it working (pic attached). Pretty frustrating for a vehicle this new.

What’s more frustrating—I have an extended warranty, and the dealership still hasn’t been able to fix it. They keep telling me it’s my phone, but that doesn’t track:

Same phone works perfectly in every other vehicle (including their loaners)

Tried multiple cables, including brand new and OEM

Issue is clearly tied to the port being loose or not holding connection

At this point it feels like they’re avoiding replacing the port/module.

Has anyone else had this happen?

Did your dealer actually replace the USB port or the whole media hub?

Was it covered under warranty?

Anything specific I should be saying to get them to take this seriously?

It’s honestly a little ridiculous having to rig duct tape just to charge/connect in a 2021 car.

Appreciate any insight 🙏

Assuming this is covered by your extended warranty, they should fix it. The part itself is very inexpensive.....they can just replace the USB hub......looks like this. Unfortunately, Ford did not make it easy to just pop it out to replace it. It does require taking the apart the dash significantly to get to it.

Type-A ports (that’s the one you’re plugged in to) are notorious for failing mechanically. Fundamentally poor design.

There’s no preventing failure, only mitigating it. Best practice it to avoid repeated usage, just plugging something in and leaving it be.

Stupid, I know, but that’s one reason for the Type-C standard. It’s just more robust.

You stated USB-C but you are plugged into the USB-A port … why not stop using USB-A and get a USB-C cable at least until the dealership replaces the module? And USB-C has a higher power delivery rating (besides being more reliable as discussed earlier)

Appreciate you breaking that down—that actually makes a lot of sense. I’ve been having to wedge my cable in just to get a connection, so something definitely isn’t right internally. Good to know I’m not crazy on this one.

That’s a good call, I haven’t tried a full reset yet. I’ll give that a shot and see if it makes any difference before I go nuclear on it. Appreciate the tip 👊

This is probably the route I’m gonna take for now. I didn’t even think about using a dual USB-C adapter—way easier fix than dealing with the dealership again. Appreciate you 🙌

I do have an extended warranty, but they keep trying to tell me it’s “my phone,” which is wild considering I literally have to wedge the cable just to get power. Also not trying to pay another $250 diagnostic fee when I’m basically handing them the problem on a silver platter.

Shoutout to Phil Long Ford in Denver 🤢… certified stealership energy.

What do you mean by dual USB-C adapter ?

Btw you can get one of these voltage monitors that plugs right there into the 12V PowerPort which comes with 2 more ports but these are not data ports so you cannot use CarPlay/Android Auto - advantage is you can keep an eye on the 12V Battery

Maybe get an independent to diagnose it and if warranty won't cover their repair because they arent an authorized mechanic, take that diag to another dealer and see if they'll do something at that point.

Whatever you do, I wouldn't go back to the first dealer. Sounds like they dont deserve the business.

I would contact Ford directly via phone and say the dealer is giving you the run around. If the issue happens with different cables in the same port and different phones then it's clearly a fault of the part.

My guess is that they are playing a game because they would rather pocket a $250 diagnostic fee than get paid warranty labor rates (what they'd get under Ford Protect) to disassemble the dash and replace the part.

In regards to generally charging the phone, I would get a Wireless to Wired adapter like an Ottocast or Carlinkit. They're under $100 and boot pretty quickly; there's slight lag (a little under a second) for non-call activities (streaming the video via wifi to the dongle), but it's timely enough for turn-by-turn GPS and it just means skipping a music track takes a second. You can then

A. Not have to plug/unplug your phone in for shorter drives or when your phone is already charged
B. For when you want to charge your phone, have a faster charger in the 12V DC port that will charge your phone much more quickly. The Galaxy S26 Ultra will take up to 60 watts for example; earlier discussion on this forum indicates the BS USB port provided power is pretty anemic (1V @ 5A = 5W)
C. Spare wear on the USB port since you can just 3M adhesive the little dongle up and not have to move the cable regularly since it remains plugged in

Yeah I hear you—that’s kind of where my head’s at too. I’ve tested multiple cables and phones in the same port and it still cuts out unless I mess with it, so it definitely feels like a hardware issue, not user error.

I may end up contacting Ford directly because I’m getting the same vibe about the dealership just dragging their feet on it.

I’ve looked into the wireless adapters too (Ottocast/Carlikit). Not a bad option, but I’m a little hesitant with the slight lag. I rely pretty heavily on the map when I’m off-roading, so I want that connection as responsive and stable as possible.

Also, honestly hoping @Ford Motor Company sees this—I’ve noticed on other threads they’ll occasionally reach out when people call out quality control or poor customer service on here.

Appreciate the insight 👊

I just meant a USB-C splitter that gives two USB-C outputs from one port.

Main thing for me though is I want a solid CarPlay connection—I use the map a lot when I’m off-roading and having it on the dash is way better than my phone.

My 12V port is already taken by my dash cam, so I’m really just trying to keep one clean, dedicated data line for CarPlay. Charging isn’t really a priority for me.

Yeah I’m in the same boat. If I have to wedge the cable just to get power, it really seems like a port issue, not the phone.

I’ve got an extended warranty too, so I’m hoping they’ll take care of it without the extra diagnostic fee.

Might look into an independent diag like you mentioned just to have something on paper. Appreciate the insight 👍
