I just jumped ship to Subaru after owning a couple of Fords and wanted to make a post reflecting my initial impressions.
I put on a quite handful of miles on the BS and my recent torque converter developments had me worried. Decided it was time. I got the top trim Outback with the turbo engine so coming from Big Bend, it's a different league. The thing rippppps even with the CVT. I also missed the more sedan-esque sitting position and the Outback looks like a better fit for me.
  • I miss the buttons already. Not a huge fan of controls being moved to the touch screen. This trend needs to die.
  • The pin code entry is so convenient. I would go ride my bike or run and leave the keys in the car. Outback has something similar but nowhere near as useful.
  • On a related note, the free connected services like remote start will surely be missed. I think everyone else except Ford charges for this? Crazy.
  • The rotary dial shifter gets a lot of undeserved hate. It is so quick to shift back and forth when parallel parking.
  • Radar based cruise control feels like a better solution. Even if camera-only system works just as well, I can't bring myself to trust it.
There are other small QOL things that are not worse, but different, which I am stilling getting used to.
I might be back to Ford or even Bronco Sport one day when they make a car that fits better for me.
For now, I am shopping for bumper stickers to cover the rear hatch with that properly reflect all my interests and causes. 😁

I thought Subaru's came with a bumper sticker starter pack included!

Side note, my sister developed her own IQ test: Assign everyone a base IQ of 200, then subtract ten points for every bumper sticker attached. :p

Can you elaborate more on the Outback’s similar function that makes it “nowhere near as useful”?

I had a 2016 Subaru Forester 2.0XT Touring with neatly the same engine HP and Torque specs as my Badlands which made for a nice transition

I sold the Subaru for similar reasons, transmission had to be replaced and the replacement had to be replaced, Subaru added an extended warranty but only to 100k miles and I hit just over 112k. Almost every 10k like clockwork a sensor would fail and it had a similar battery issue recall like the BS.

Nice vehicle but before I buy another I’ll check to be sure the transmission issues starting with 2010 models (and going to at least 2022 before I stopped looking) are solved

There is a button on the trunk where you can program a sequence of presses to unlock the doors.

I have the warranty until 100k and will try to stay on top of the maintenance. 🤞

Thanks… I forgot about that pain in the rear (pun intended) feature. Almost never used it because of its difficulty and no “SubaruPass” App back in 2016
