Just wanted to add that I previously owned a 2014 Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon that I'd bought new back then. Seems like Chrysler had a policy in place from at least 2012 or so where they upped the price for those annually. It made Wranglers a popular buy for people in the sense they didn't seem to depreciate in value as much as almost anything else on the market. But IMO, that "game" on Chrysler's part isn't sustainable. They're reaching an upper limit of what one is really worth at this point.

That's why vehicles like the Bronco are going to really cut into their sales, IF Ford doesn't go crazy with price hikes too.

Top vehicle markup Jeep Wrangler. The new Maverick isn't far behind
"The Ford Maverick compact pickup truck made the list six times. In Pennsylvania, buyers can anticipate paying 34.7% above MSRP, which is about $7,843."

Our models our going up in price on kbb as well. So makes up for the extra if you traded up . At least for now. The bs sport base i have. I payed 27,700.. now a new base is almost 30. But i can get 32 for my trade

Thanks for that, I never thought about price increases that way. I mean covering increased costs yes. Improving profit margin if the demand will support it yes. But I didn’t think about what that would do to used prices. Since the new ones get relatively more expensive, so too would used alternatives rise somewhat alongside those increases, all other factors being equal & all that.

Ford is already going crazy with price increases. An equivalent "22 to my '21 is almost $5,000 higher. I think Ford knows ppl will pay I dont think it will dampen demand at all. Plus ever increasing labor, parts, and shipping costs probably account for some of the increase.

My 22 Badlands was 39,070, but I ordered it with what I wanted. I originally wanted the 21 Outer Banks, but the dealership couldn't order it with a power moonroof. That was a deal breaker for me. By the time I decided to go with the Badlands, I had to order the 22. Aw shucks.

I was thinking of the other guy with the wrangler, but yeah it applies well to what you wrote too. If the new ones get more expensive, so too should the used ones, so you can get exactly the situation you have. Good problem to have. But yeah as has been pointed out too, there’s limits to just how much price increase can be absorbed.

Even Harley slapped a 1k dollar extra charge on all the new bikes. Was at shop looking and was like nope. I’m not paying another Harley tax. Plus mine I’ve done bunch of work on. Not starting over at an increased price. The BS pricing is almost 20% higher then when it launched a year and a half ago. Inflation is at ā€œ7.9%ā€ and pay increases are like 3%. Seems fair lol

Ford knows dealers are selling above sticker price so they know they can jack prices up and when ppl show up to the empty Ford dealer lots they will pay it.

Odd thought: perhaps the greater increase in BL price is to throttle demand a little to make production more even.

In a conference room somewhere at Ford someone said "Wait, wait! Check this out. How about we remove a few subtle features AND raise the price?"

That someone is probably a VP now.

They're in kind of a tricky spot with the BL running right into the price range of the full size Bronco. Not everyone (in fact, almost no one) needs what a full size Bronco is capable of, and very few people actually want the ride of such a thing for a daily driver, but at the price a deck out Badlands gets to it starts to make sense to get all the things you could for that much money. This price increase may push some number of people from the Sport to a lower trim full size Bronco.

I’m sure that trade off happens and probably will more now with the increase. Which makes me wonder. Does Ford care about which one of their cars you buy with your budget? If I’m spending the same $40K on a car, does it matter if it’s BS BL, base 2 door, Titanium escape or base corsair? If the profit margin per vehicle at each price point is the same roughly (and we know more expensive vehicles do carry higher profit margins) then Ford should be indifferent as to which one I choose out of their showroom, as long as I’m not leaving & going down the street to Toyota.
I’m sure to some extent they price the max each model & market will bear, so I really like your theory that the price increase might be to throttle back BL demand a bit either because of component supply constraints, or even just factory space production constraints. When I ordered mine, there was a loaded Escape titanium in the showroom. Snickering for less with arguably ā€˜more’ features in it. So assuming the same cost to make roughly, they must make a higher profit margin on the BS.

For me it came down to the 80/20 rule basically. I'm buying it for what it I need 80% of the time, which is going to work. For that 20% of the time when there's snow or I want to get to a trailhead off a forest road that has rougher conditions, then that's where the Badlands trim comes in. Sure, the Black Diamond 2 door Bronco I've spec'd out a dozen times would do that 20% better, but the 80% would arguably be worse, and for $3k more. Maybe one day (lolz), but I could honestly get by with a BB and opting for the BL was already a no compromises step up.
