I guess he had to pick a "theme" and then really overdo it...? Kinda like high school English.

I like to feel “all outdoorsy and shit.”

In all seriousness, the clearance and boxy nature cannot be dismissed. Every new CUV is so low and has such a short height cargo area. Just look at the latest Escape. If you want to carry anything tall, you have fewer and fewer choices.

I would also point out what Ford put these things through in Moab upon launch. The Badlands version to be sure, but I suspect that the main competition for this vehicle - Subaru and non-wrangler Jeeps - would struggle to do what the BS did in Moab. Especially Subaru would have a tough time with bits of it.
Point is, the vehicle can do off road if you want and are careful and has far fewer compromises the rest of the time (which is most of the time) than more "pure" off road vehicles have.

Oh, to add, it is a costume I like. The fact that it is so close in style to Land Rovers was what appealed to me before I bought it and appeals to me now. The Bronco heritage is meaningless to me personally. Now if it was an International Scout II rebirth... That would be something!

My opinion (warning...I can be insensitive by appearance while meaning no direct or indirect Ill will toward anyone reading this). He wrote a creative writing piece and wanted so much to hate the sport. But in the end, despite how his wool socks and Birkenstocks felt...he kinda liked it. Unfortunately somewhere he was in fact traumatized and needs to show where the bad Ford man touched him in order to heal.
He makes some salient points and does gloss some of the selling points making the sport a bronco. There are parts he clearly generalized. And as someone who completed my own test drives plural...his views wouldn't have made a drop of difference in my purchase.
I buy for me. I bought a vehicle that navigates the Walmart parking lot after fording 18 inches of water on a drenched lake trail in a storm deluge. And taking an ORV trail any damn time I feel like it. All I know is my mechanic who owns several old school Cherokee can't wait to get it on a lift and start lifting it's skirt. ?

Guy must frequent r/Bronco
I am amused at the bravado and posing at bronco6G. I visit to see some of the genuine owners pics as the new bronco is pretty cool. But I laugh at the same clown show bitching about Ford and their eternal wait, next level screw ups, and more waits...then I grab the keys to my badlands that's been in my garage for a few months...and enjoy the drive knowing my badlands SPORT is 1000x more capable than their empty code 99 build sheet covered in their tears.

I'm glad in the end he gave it a chance and ended up liking the BS for what it is. Not everyone needs or wants the capability (or price tag) of a big Bronco, as awesome as those are. All I need is a vehicle with 4WD/AWD, good comfort and tech, good fuel economy, enough space to haul my fiance and I's bikes, ability to carry kayaks, and is reasonably priced. The Sport offers all that in a really cool looking boxy package. For me, its damn near perfect. In a sea of the typical boring CUV offerings, I'm really glad the Sport exists.

Also I'm not sure if he was looking at some marked up units but the Sport doesn't even come close to $50k MSRP. I've seen a few fully loaded Badlands with pretty much every option that just barely crossed $40k.

In fact, one of the problems with the big bronco is that it is so big. That is a huge turn off for me. I would rather have a modern tech equipped 4x4 the size of a 45 year old Toyota Landcruiser or Land Rover Defender which can get into and out of tight places. I would also prefer tall narrow tyres over massive wide tyres (which suck in snow). I don’t drive in a desert so I don’t need something pretending to be a humvee.

This is what drew me to the Bronco Sport (nothing to do with the Bronco brand per se). There's huge demand for smaller, boxier off-road capable vehicles in the spirit of old Defenders and FJ40s. Heck, look at prices of used FJ Cruisers with 100k+ miles!

Until the Bronco Sport, there weren't many new vehicles in the USA that scratched the itch. The redesigned RAV4 TRD and Adventure trims -- which 'replaced' the smaller FJ Cruiser Toyota briefly considered -- are kinda there. Jeep styling misses the mark on most of their vehicles. I think we'll see a resurgence in these vehicles thanks to hybrid and electric motors to 'offset' the terrible aerodynamics of boxy shapes + tall wheels.

Honestly, to my taste, the biggest problem with Toyota these days is that by and large they are horrendously ugly. The single best way to fix the styling of a Tacoma, for example, is to put an over landing canopy on the back, remove the bumpers completely and replace them with big ARB stuff or the like and hide the grill behind a bash bar. Same goes for the four runner. Chop it off behind the front seats, overland canopy on back, and big bumpers and cover the grill.

I was on the big Bronco train until it became clear just how big it actually is. I need to transport family members with mobility challenges and my truck is just too high. Was going to sadly trade my Raptor to meet those needs but the Sport came along and the numbers said I could have both and both be off road capable. A couple test drives, FE and BL and liked it. Pretty sure the Sport Badlands will cross the stream and handle the rutted climb to our hunting camp but will see if it needs bigger tires.
Just waiting for the 22s to open up.

I had the the RAV4 TRD when my Bronco Base was in the shop. the seats were awful, it was hard on gas nothing about it was enjoyable. for the money there is no way id would look at Toyota anymore.
