I asked YOUR question in the good ol' googles and it said this.

Ford generally recommends against using aftermarket fuel additives for the 1.5L EcoBoost engine, stating that modern fuel already contains sufficient detergents. Using high-quality fuel, such as Top Tier gas, is suggested to maintain performance.
Key details regarding fuel for the 1.5L engine include:
  • No Additives Needed: Ford does not recommend extra additives or treatments for normal use.
  • Approved Cleaners: Some reports indicate that Ford has approved specific BG products for maintenance, specifically BG 44K Fuel System Cleaner (every oil change) and Air Intake & Valve Cleaner (every other oil change).
  • Fuel Requirements: The engine is optimized for 95 octane (or similar) unleaded fuel.
  • Fuel Quality: Using gasoline with more than 10% ethanol is not recommended, as it may cause engine damage or affect the warranty.
Potential Risks:
  • Oil Additives: Ford explicitly warns against using oil additives or engine treatments, as they are unnecessary and may cause damage not covered by warranty.
  • Carbon Buildup: Because this is a Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) engine, fuel additives do not clean the intake valves directly. The previously mentioned BG air intake cleaner is for this purpose.

The 1.5 in the BS has port and direct injection , so fuel wash does clean the intake valves.

The 2025 has port and direct.

Prior years are direct injection. That was their main change to the engines in 2025.

wrong, my 23 has direct and port injection also. I am still not sure why they list that as a engine change when all the previous ones had it also, unless maybe they are talking about the 2L spicificly with that as the 2.0 never had it prior to 2025, while the 1.5L did.

I believe that's wrong My 23 specs say port and direct The Ford Escape forum says that the 21 Escape has dual injection with the same engine.

From the 2025 BS manual:

Your vehicle operates on regular unleaded gasoline with a minimum pump (R+M)/2 octane rating of 87.Some fuel stations, particularly those in high altitude areas, offer fuels posted as regular unleaded gasoline with an octane rating below 87. The use of these fuels could result in engine damage that will not be covered by the vehicle Warranty.

Do not use:
• Diesel fuel.
• Fuels containing kerosene or paraffin.
• Fuel containing more than 15% ethanol(E15) or E85 fuel.
Fuels containing metallic-basedadditives, including manganese-based compounds.
• Fuels containing the octane booster additive, methylcyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl (MMT).
The use of fuels with metallic compounds such as methylcyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl, which is a manganese-based fuel additive, will impair engine performance and affect the emission control system.

AI is not always the best source.

The fuel fill-up nozzle clearly says you can use up to 15% ethanol.

I have used it many times where available. I am up to 110k on my 22 BS OBX and no Ill effects.

Always used 87. Now that I am over 100k and I dont drive near as much I am getting 89 octane most of the time.

Still runs perfect and still the original water pump.

Oil changes with full synthetic every 4k and always put in LiquiMoly MoS2.
