Hi all!
Anyone have any insight on replacing the roof front plate in front of the sunroof?

I’ve sourced a replacement part but want a plan before trimming to tear it apart.

Took a substantial rock hit and have a significant dent.

Appreciate it!

That must have been startling. Insurance?

Definitely could turn it into insurance, but would rather not pay the deductible if it’s something I can swap out. Part looks to only be about $200.

Might be a moot point though. Just picked up a pretty epic stone chip on the windshield. That’s likely going to need a replacement.

Oh well. Literally just got the car back from the dealer to fix a bunch of little things that came up after purchasing it CPO beginning of Feb.

I only had a couple small chips over 5 years with my last car and nothing major. Already down two significant rock hits in just a few months.

Hey, twins!!

I caught a 4" chunk of concrete that flew off a dump truck going the opposite way. So relieved it somehow missed the windshield and the sunroof. Haven't repaired it. My understanding is that you have to remove the windshield in order to replace that panel. And that is a lot of factory-built seals to break loose. I'm not going to risk it despite the cosmetics. If I ever have to get a windshield replacement, I'll look at it again. If you figure out anything different, I'll check back and see how it went. GLWR.

This is today, this is 18 months ago when it happened. Just a little surface rust now.

Yikes! Stinks your car took that hit!

I’m surprised by the rust. The part on my car feels like plastic.

A little surface rust now will turn into a lot later, and then eat a hole. At the very least, I'd apply some rust converter such as this:

That would be covered under the Comprehensive part of your insurance. Comp often has a lower deductible. It doesn't count against you because it's an "act of God" causation and not a collision. Comp coverage is usually cheap too so change your deductible to 100 but keep your collision (at fault) deductible higher to save money.

Yeah, not the worst idea for sure. I've thought about hitting it with black paint but I don't want to make it stand out with concealer, heh.

I agree with the other post, that insurance will cover it. But if you think they'll pay for it and not extort the money back out of you with higher premiums, you're mistaken. At least in my part of the country, this is a terrible time to try to switch insurance carriers and many are not writing new policies.

Should be easier to repair than replace. Grind out the paint down to bare metal and use the "key" system where keys are welded into the dent then pull on slowly with a key puller. I've been watching a lot of Robby Layton videos and that is what he uses to pull dents.

It is pretty soft/flexible. I swear mine improved itself with time. I bet even a hot glue stick might be able to pull it some.

Don't just apply black paint over it without sanding down first. Sand it, prime it, then paint.

Is it reachable from the inside? I would try to nudge it out from the inside.
