What's up with my steering knuckles being completely covered in surface rust? I only have 1,036 miles on my BB.

Pretty typical for Ford. Even my 2001 Escape's front seat mounts looked like that. Will not be an issue for the life of the vehicle, it just looks nasty and kinda takes away the 'warm and fuzzy' of your new ride.

Thanks. Seems weird, almost like they didn't coat the part. I've seen photos of other BS that have been on the road longer and the knuckle seems to be coated.

It is bare metal, it is going to have surface rust. NORMAL with any vehicle.

Not normal with any vehicle. There are bare metal parts on the vehicle that don't look like this. There is a bare metal part right next to it you can see in the photo. Brake shields are also bare metal and they don't have the same level of surface rust. My 1977 corvette is 47 years old and the steering knuckles are bare metal and don't have this bright orange surface rust.

Yes could have said
Surface rust is NORMAL with any vehicle for certain types of metal including certain types of coated metal

and I’m sure that is not 100% correct as I’m not a mechanical engineer but I took the post about NORMAL with my explanation in mind ?
Appreciate the clarification. For comparison, here is 70k mile tahoe and 1977 corvette.

I see a lot of corrosion in the pics of both your GM cars. Rust (red-colored) is just one type of corrosion. A surface patina of red rust such as you see on your Bronco Sport will form fairly quickly on unprotected iron or steel. Protected surfaces will take longer to see red rust, but the pitting visible on various parts of both your Corvette and Tahoe indicate corrosion has begun under the protective coating on those parts.

The question you need to answer is the corrosion you see progressing fast enough to cause significant weakening of the affected part before the vehicle reaches end of life. I have confidence that a large chunk of iron or steel such as that used in the suspension of your Bronco Sport will not weaken significantly before the rest of the car is ready for the junkyard.
