I’m no expert but I have a 1 hour lunch at work and I usually sit with the tailgate open the whole hour all summer and have never had battery issues. I just make sure the switch that controls the interior lights from turning on/off when doors are open, is switched off.

Ok, I'll bite... How do you turn the interior lights off? The knob to the left of the steering wheel just seems like exterior lights.

And I know about the switch in the bed that turns the tailgate lights on and off. But all of the interior lights, no clue where that would be.

There is the light switch between the two lights for the driver/passenger seats in the front. It controls the dome lights

Ah, ok. I didn't think the front dome lights even came on when I opened the tailgate, but I probably haven't been paying attention.

I use one of the Jackeries and use a fold-up 100w solar panel to keep it charged. I am reluctant to use car power very long because you may not be able to start.

Same. I have an Anker and a 60w panel. I use it for my 12v fridge.
