I'm too old to be climbing a ladder in the middle of the night. I sleep on a cot with a foam pad.
My 7'x11' Springbar tent sets up in about 5 minutes with two people and less than 10 by myself. It has mosquito netting that zips tight to keep insects and snakes out. On a cold, windy morning I can cook inside out of the weather.
Does anyone think a bear wouldn't climb up on top of your vehicle if there was something it wanted in your tent? Imagine one jumping on the top of your tent with you in it. Bear spray anyone?
I paid less than $1350 for my 12'x14' wall tent with wood stove. Seems like a lot of money for what it is. I see a lot of RTT's for sale on Craigslist.
A friend wouldn't go the the Gila wilderness with me because of an experience he had in the Boy Scouts. One boy woke up with a rattlesnake on top of his sleeping bag and between his legs. The Scoutmaster got his pistol and told him to spread his legs. Not the right way to do it, but it worked.
I watched a docent at the Sonoran Desert Museum use a broomstick with a steel hook on the end and gently pick up a snake and move it into a box. It didn't even rattle. I moved one away from camp once with my fishing rod by making a loop at the end and hooking it over his head.
I just ordered one of these last week...once I take delivery and get this thing installed I will take some pictures. Just installed the Thule HD kit from Ford the other day, thinking this should work out pretty well.
