Hi all,

I am wondering if anyone else has tried connecting old iPods to their system - I found one thread about an iPod Classic that couldn't connect (my iPod Classic 160 GB connects just fine to the system) but they didn't seem to have much success identifying the issue of the "This USB device is not supported. Please Remove!" message.

My iPod Nano is an 8 GB, somewhere in the 2006 vintage. It's worked in every vehicle I've had, including my mom's 2013 Ford Escape with (probably) the original Sync software. Its software version is 1.1.3.

My iPod Classic is the 2007 vintage and plugs in just fine in the car. Its software version is 1.1.2.

I used the same cord to try each of these iPods; I am going to dig around for another cord just to make sure it isn't a cord issue, but the cord does work to connect both iPods to the computer, so I'm skeptical it is the cord making the Nano not work in the Bronco Sport.

I recognize that these devices are 15-16 years old, and I definitely stream my music on my phone as well. I just like to take advantage of the fact a younger version of myself spent a lot of time making sure all the album art and info was correct on the iPods. I also would like to continue pushing out the time when I will have to breakdown and spend some time generating playlists to reorganize my music when these iPods eventually fail.

Any other folks out there have a success with the old iPods?

TIA!

Did you know SYNC3 includes Gracenote? If you put all your music on a USB drive and plug it in to a USB port SYNC3 will pull up the album art for whatever song you're playing. It's pretty nifty!

I don’t use the old iPod on SYNC3 but have you already tried Google and found everyone with the old iPod when used in a sync3 vehicle has the same issue as you? For example: https://fordsyncforum.com/index.php?/topic/7259-ipod-classic-endless-indexing/

Thanks for the tip on this with Gracenote; at least if I end up having to go the USB route that might save some time!

Thanks for this information. I did, actually, use the Google (and even tried some of the suggestions) before posting here. Sometimes you get lucky and post in a forum where someone happens to have an answer that works for solving this issue you’re having. ?‍♀

I’ll just keep testing what I find!

Right I tried many sources and searches for why a documented section in the bronco sport owners manual having to do with climate controls didn’t work and finally someone replied that it would only work if we use FORSCAN to put the climate controls onto the 8” screen. That was the clue I needed.

Hoping someone helps you with how to get the classic iPod to work.

So I was thinking the 2nd link might have new suggestions you haven’t tried yet, was it helpful?

They did mention my thought on the operating system for the iPod; it's just strange because my iPod running the 1.1.2 version works in the car (and according to iTunes, is "up to date" for the OS for the Classic) but the iPod running the 1.1.3 version is the one I'm getting the "not recognized" message (and, also according to iTunes, is "up to date" on the OS for the Nano). It is possible those are different operating systems but I was pretty sure the older "pre-touch" iPods all ran the same OS, so it is interesting to me the older OS version works and the newer OS version doesn't.

Sorry if this a silly question, but can you connect an iPhone and a BT iPod to Sync3 at the same time?

Yes to Sync connections but I thought only one device can be in use at a time. Similarly with carplay .. one device in use at a time

But I haven’t tried multiple devices .. my GF plugs in her iPhone to charge and I select to ignore her iPhone because we don’t need her iPhone while mine is active.

I believe you can simultaneously connect your phone via Bluetooth and the iPod using the USB cable. You would, of course, sacrifice access to CarPlay/AA interface. When choosing a source to listen to using the SYNC audio interface you should see both Bluetooth and USB sources.

Note that audio quality of Bluetooth sources will be lower than those using USB connection.
